Practice Your Scales and Have Fun

Practicing scales over and over (and over) can lead to boredom but it’s absolutely necessary.

If you need a break from practicing patterns up and down the neck, try this practice hack:

Pick a key and a scale then, use two string dyads and improvise a little melody. It’s fun and it will help you get to know the scale.

In this lesson, we’ll have some fun with the G Major and E Major scales. Check it out!

Simple to follow cos the teacher is so good. I’m enjoying playing guitar these days because of the musical structure John provides us with behind the cool playing. Cheers and thanks..!

Thanks for this lesson, John. The scales are to be memorized. The tricky part is to get licks out of them. I'm working on it! 🎵🎵🎵

A great example of this is the opening guitar lines of Rhiannon in the key of A.

I learned this in the very beginning back in 1970. T T S T T T S (tone, tone, semi-tone, tone, tone, TONE, semi-tone). And for harmony it’s every other mode. Such as first mode with third mode. They go great. Second and fourth. And so on. Cool! I so wish that I could have had lessons in the beginning. I’ve picked up some really bad habits. (Like drinking! Lol Over 20yrs sober. I drank more than the crowd sometimes!) Wait! There’s more! Lol These double notes are also part of a bigger chord going up the neck. Like E F#m G#m A B etc. ? Lol

THANK you for this lesson.Looking forward to a lesson on soloing whilst transitioning in a simple 1, 4, 5 progression. Most importantly, how does one keep accurate timing and groove whilst changing to chords in progression.A simple ', watered down' lesson please.I thank you in anticipation.

Holy Hell. This opened my eyes to stuff I knew but never thought about it. In a way, aren't these just triad patterns from CAGED? Anyway, thank you! Great lesson.
