It's so hard to catch Kyrie doing it in real time. Harden and Giannis make it obvious

The gather step is just the NBA giving a third step to highly athletic players. It's why so many players go from the three line to a layup without ever dribbling which to me is opposite of Dr. Naismith's idea that to move with the ball you need to be dribbling it. Probably also why many players outright travel and don't establish a pivot foot any longer because the refs look at the footwork less and less because there's less of a need when they can legally have two steps plus a gather step. Shaqtin' A Fool wouldn't exist without all the traveling.

3, 6 and 7 I could argue the players already have two hands on the ball when that zero step foot hits the ground, which makes it not a zero step at all. Would have to watch it in ultra-slow-motion and perfect resolution to see for sure, so in real time the refs are counting it as simultaneous. The rules is that "the first step occurs when a foot, or both feet, touch the floor AFTER the player gathers the ball". If a step is simultaneous with your gather then it is technically not after the gather and therefore is not counted as your first.

All I see is guys picking up their dribble, then taking 3 steps. What am I missing?

Honestly they need to change this crap. Do any of these in an average joe league and you'll be called for travelling

the 1st video we cant see, but he puts the ball in the air and keeps walking, thats carrying the ball.
The rules say that carrying is illegal when you dribble again.
But as soon as you carry the ball it means that you are already in control of the ball (it doesnt matter if its with 1 or 2 hands) so when you are in control of the ball those steps count as travel.

00:58 he grabs the ball and his left foot is on the floor.
SO the one you said its 0 its already 1.
Thats the problem with people saying 0.
0 is not possible.
GATHERING the ball is a process between the end of the dribble and the 1st step.
Not the 0 step.

Do people realize this has always been the rule and that the rules have only been rewritten to better clarify it? Players in the 70's and 80's were doing moves like this.

It’s a damn travel. And how you don’t have Giannis on here demonstrating the “gather step” aka travelfest, I’ll never know

This is ridiculous!! They traveled in each play .. don't matter if legs are side steps or forward, you CANNOT TAKE MORE THAN 2 .. 3 or more is considered TRAVEL VIOLATION.. Just because refs don't see or call it for money reasons, NEVER STOPPED MAKING THESE A TRAVEL

Its a simple rule: if the ball come to rest AFTER your foot is on the ground, it's not counted as a step.

So if I cross over L to R, and as the ball bounces I have my right foot on the ground and then grab it -- 0, and i am then allowed 2 steps.
