This was really Interesting. I spoke with a guy a couple years ago who runs an import/export type business in China, he claimed there are a lot of people in business there who resent being thought of as the world's supplier of cheap garbage. I'd quite like to see products labeled "proudly made in China" I also like to see distinctly Chinese industrial design like the Xuelin products.

I think this is missing a key point. If company 1 invests $1mil in original product development plus addition costs in supply chains, tooling and manufacturing and company 2 comes along and makes a copy based on that product they can undercut the original designer and manufacturer as they done have the development costs. This is what IP protection was intended to do, admittedly it's not always the current behaviour.

Also if company 1 is not based in China but manufactures in China there is no was that company 1 can effectively compete with any other company that did not have the product development costs. That being saud, if company 1 does not want to compete in the Chinese market then other companies that compete solely in that market should be free to do so but again it limits company 1's growth.

Just my opinion

As a Chinese I do understand what "Insects Awaken" means, along with the graphs on the box, which are not soldiers.... I think by the translation it will never be able to bring the culture background to a foreigner. The local market is also large, it's nothing wrong to do the marketing like this, but they are really lazy not to make a oversea version of that representation.

Hi.. Did you ever try a pair of the Nuraphones, I have a pair I use for travel as the sounds good to my esrs and I love the noise cancellation.

as a Chinese, you described Chinese mentality perfectly with that lack of last 10 to 5% on many areas of the culture. I always joke with my wife saying more white people have OCD, which is a good thing in my book, and the reason I am in USA.

I do enjoy a bit of insight into the culture and mentality of business around Shenzen. So are they subject to different rules compared to mainland China?

interesting video. Nice to have someone actually talk about the origins behind the whole Chi-Fi community. As a Chinese, proud to see things being recognized, and I hope it gets better and better in the future.

One of the reasons that companies are trying to keep their names away from Shenzhen is because of shanzhai. Customers may think you're a copycat just because your address is somewhere in huaqiangbei. I would tell ppl to double check the authentication if the product is from huaqianbei-shenzhen. I know it's stereotype but it's how it is. The problem of shanzhai is almost difficult to avoid if Shenzhen keeps being flexible and efficient on upgrading and customizing products because that means ppl can copy things in a very efficient way as well. It's a  a mixed blessing.

Great video, very informative, but lets be honest, if any of us owned KZ wouldnt you be slightly tempted to open up a pair of unique melody MEST and try to copy the tuning or make it very similar ?

Really cool video and appreciate you taking the time to talk about this amazing city. Just a quick tip on the pronunciation… in Pinyin, the Zh sound is like the J in Jennifer, or maybe G sound like in Genuine. So it's more like ShenJen.

I love the subject you approached here. I’d love to see a more in-depth video on Shenzhen and Chi-Fi that goes into a little detail. Given a narrower focus than the typical SZ coverage, I’m sure you could really do the subject some justice.

Companies are generally very secretive about their supply chain, since competitors can too easily copy their products once theyve figured out their supply chain. Nura talking about in the Wired documentary is already being very open about it, but openly giving out information to their competitors on their website etc. can't be realistically expected. And it is especially copying is such a big part of doing business in shenzhen, that companies have an even bigger incentive to protect their supply chain information by any means necessary, although this kind of information can be quickly dug up nowadays.

Fantastic information here.
Well done.
As a Toolmaker japan did the same thing for the machine tool industry in the late 70s.
Cheers.

You are totally right with pr/customer service reps, if there's something Chi-fi completely lacks, it's proper communication. Like you said, Chi-fi creates, moves on to the next thing; with that strat they really couldn't care less about communication and feedback.

With that said though some big companies just care only marginally more.
