Innocent Black Man Who Spent 36 Years In Jail Finally Freed

Despite DNA evidence clearly exonerating New Orleans' Sullivan Walter, Walter spent 36 years incarcerated as an innocent man for rape and burglary. Dr. Rashad Richey and Jessica Burbank discuss on Indisputable. Tell us what you think in the comments below.

"Prosecutors got their conviction, but at a great cost to an innocent man. To make matters worse, defense attorneys did an inadequate job of saving their client.

Blood and semen evidence that could’ve cleared a Black man’s name in a home-invasion rape was never considered in his trial, and he spent more than 35 years in prison as a result, the longest known wrongful incarceration of a juvenile in Louisiana’s history and the fifth-longest in the nation.

Glad he's out but that fact that he went to prison at all is extremely disturbing. Why is the justice system so currupt. He is a victim of a crime

My wife was selected for jury duty a few years ago. The defendant was a police officer. They asked her how she felt about an officer being on trial. My wife stated anyone wearing a uniform in authority is held to a higher standard, just like her husband was for 20 years in the Army. They quickly dismissed her from the jury.

He needs to sue that prosecutor and the lawyers who did this.

He deserves 36 million dollars. Those lawyers should be arrested.

The irony is that the real offender got away with it.

He is about to get paid. All lawyers involved should be jailed. Victim knew what she was doing. She is enjoying hell I hope.

A million dollars a year compensation= 36 million dollars?
Does not seem enough to me, you cannot get those years back.

I pray for all men(esp black men) that are innocent but are still behind bars. I hope your day of freedom gets here sooner.

So he was sentenced to 39 years and it took them 36 of those years to figure out that he was actually innocent? Wrongfully convicted people hurt my soul to think about because I cannot imagine the mental anguish it would be like to be innocent sitting in prison.

Dr Richey! I just had an attempted murder case dismissed against me. And I commented on your videos about my court appointed attorney and the prosecutor conspired against me and yes the judge was involved.
But now I’m trying to deal with the inhuman injustice that I endured while I was in the Ingham County Jail. I was there from August 1, to August 6, 2021 against the judges order. I was denied my medication except for Tuesday. I was threatened, and called every racial slur you can think of. I had less than 3 ounces of water the entire stay and I ate absolutely nothing because they threatened to poison my food. By Thursday afternoon I was so hungry I had to try and eat, but when I opened the top a fly flew out. I was in the same clothes the entire time.

36 years ? There is no way he can fairly compensated. That’s between half and a third of his lifetime.
