About 20 years ago, I worked as a substitute teacher. I hold 2 degrees in psychology, including a graduate degree. I have no formal training in teaching at all. The school district would have kept me in that $85/diem, no benefits position forever, if I had let it happen. What I learned about the state of education in texas shocked me, as I had attended school here. Even the “smart” kids were terrible at spelling and grammar, and in first year algebra, they were using calculators. I took first year algebra in 7th grade, in the same school district, and we did not use calculators. I gave them a test—I saw the materials they were being tested upon. They should not have needed nor been given calculators. That was 20 years ago. I am certain it is much, much worse now. I can hear it in the voices of young people around me.

Also: not teaching cursive handwriting means that millions of Americans could never read the original text of the Constitution, not even if they tried. I do not believe that is an error. I believe it is entirely intentional.

Don't trust autocorrect. Seriously, don't.
There's a city in Germany called Munich. The German translation for this is "München."
Once, I was on a web browser on my phone, at google, having called up a German-to-English translation that involved typing in this particular word. Now you can do that with the keyboard on the average phone, but the "autocorrect" on my phone could not seem to understand that "München" is what I meant to type. It kept replacing the word with "Manchester."
No, I did not mean to type "Manchester." I typed in "german to english, " went to the block for German print, and it would not let me type in German. How would someone _accidentally_ type "München?" There's an umlaut in there. How tricky is it to accidentally type an umlaut?
