The Deep State Is Kind of Awesome | NYT Opinion

As America closes in on a major election, mistrust is brewing around the mysterious government entity that’s now denounced in scary-sounding terms — “the deep state” and “the swamp.” What do those words even mean? Who exactly do they describe?

We went on a road trip to find out. As we met the Americans who are being dismissed as public enemies, we discovered that they are … us. They like Taylor Swift. They dance bachata. They go to bed at night watching “Star Trek” reruns. They go to work and do their jobs: saving us from Armageddon.

Sure, our tax dollars pay them, but as you’ll see in the video above, what a return on our investment we get!

When we hear “deep state,” instead of recoiling, we should rally. We should think about the workers otherwise known as our public servants, the everyday superheroes who wake up ready to dedicate their careers and their lives to serving us. These are the Americans we employ. Even though their work is often invisible, it makes our lives better.

But if Donald Trump is re-elected and enacts Schedule F, that could change. He would have the power to eviscerate the so-called deep state and replace our public servants with people who work for him, not us.

In the video above, you’ll meet a few of our hard-working American public servants, and we hope you’ll agree that they’re not scary at all. In fact, they’re kind of awesome.

step 1: "it's not happening"
step 2: "it's happening but only a little"
step 3: "it's happening and it's a good thing"

Probably the most disingenuous piece of “journalism” I have ever seen. Seriously dystopian

This comment section is an encouraging indication of the Times' popularity and credibility. May it continue to diminish.

4:06 "...just because we don't know about it doesn't make it suspicious". LOL! Yeah it does. When, in an open society, they take our money to supposedly represent us and refuse to be candid about what they're up to then the word 'suspicious' is justified. This video is a terrible affront to common sense.

This isn't going to change any minds, unfortunately. It plays like a puff piece of propagandistic cherry-picking. There's an excellent point, which is kind of buried, about Trump inciting paranoia based on the unknown, but unfortunately the examples are just on way too small of a scale. I imagine everyone in the country could agree that there are currently at least 4 or 5 decent people employed by the government who do helpful things for America. What's missing here is a bigger explanation of why this deep-state notion has been so effective (I believe it's because small-scale government systems are susceptible to chaos and dysfunction generated from innocent mistakes and/or isolated individuals who aren't doing their jobs well; a far-fetched secret ring of bad actors isn't necessary).

The federal government employs around 3 million people. Only a tiny fraction are elected, but many more have power over how you live your life.
These three people don't appear to be a problem though so I'm sure the rest are fine.

The heads of secret agencies of which the US have many.
The board members of military industrial complex corporations.
The board members of pharmaceutical companies.
The board members of energy and oil companies.
The billionaires with high stake bets depending on geopolitical strategies/outcomes and national legislations.
The congress members manipulating legislative and democratic processes to favor their own social and economic interest.
The funders of political Parties.
Etc.

It's not difficult, we have super influential people in positions of authority and power over our lives and political organs that ARE NOT ELECTED and do not have OUR INTERESTS in mind.

Again, not elected, yet extremely influential. Does that sound like a healthy democracy to you?

Why can't you afford normal Healthcare? Why doesn't the government do what the majority of the people want? Why do online platforms like Facebook and Twitter Receive demands from unelected, politically Tangential third parties to targeted censorship towards strategic culturally relevant people and topics?

Do you genuinely like how that sounds? Do you deny it's happening?

Lol - important part was said in one line 'there has no shortage of examples of government overreach, government spend ' - you should have done a video on that . Suddenly media is covering the good aspects.
