For people to know. While this plane (which was an A330) was in the air it suffered a compressor stall in engine number 2. Then they turned their engine 1 thrust to To/Ga (max power) to fly normally with normal speed, shortly after that their engine number 1 suffered the same conditions which meant both of the engines were no longer under control, pilots found out that they couldn’t put engine 1 thrust to less than 70% so they had to perform an over speed landing at 230Kts. For example a normal a330 landing speed is around 130-150 kts. Luckily everyone survived after the aircraft made a successful stop. The pilots made an amazing job of keeping everyone alive and safe❤

FYI
Mr. Waters, the captain is still now flying but not for Cathay Pacific; he is now flying Queens of the Skies in Atlas Air

Cathay Pacific Flight 780 was a flight from Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, Indonesia, to Hong Kong International Airport[4] on 13 April 2010. On board were 309 passengers and a crew of 13. As Flight 780 neared Hong Kong, the crew were unable to change the thrust output of the engines. The aircraft, an Airbus A330-300, landed at almost twice the speed of a normal landing, suffering minor damage. The 57 passengers who sustained injuries were hurt in the ensuing slide evacuation; one of them received serious injuries.[3][2]

The cause of the accident was contamination of the fuel taken on board at Surabaya, which gradually damaged both engines of the aircraft.[5]

The flight's two Australian pilots, Captain Malcolm Waters and First Officer David Hayhoe, who safely landed the aircraft despite the extraordinary challenge, have been compared to pilots Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles of US Airways Flight 1549 the previous year (January 2009). In March 2014, the two Flight 780 pilots were awarded the Polaris Award by the International Federation of Air Line Pilots' Associations for their heroism and airmanship.[5]

Captain Waters, who was 35 years old, had been working for Cathay Pacific for 12 years, while 37-year-old Hayhoe had been working for Cathay Pacific for 3 years and had previously served with the Royal Australian Air Force for 11 years.

Here’s some context about Chep lap kok intl airport in HK, originally Hong Kong had an intl airport call Kai tok but in the late 90’s people were complaining about the noise and the risk of crashing planes into the residential buildings because just before the runway is Kowloon city which have a population of around 50, 000 near the airport area at the time so the government decided to build a new airport somewhere else and they chose the tung Chung area since does barely any people there at the time so work began in 1990 8 years later in 1998 The airport opened and the old airport closed . The old airport now is mainly a park and a cruiser port, but there is still a small part of the airport still remaining to this day. And in April 2010 CX780 from Indonesia to HK had a catastrophic failure of One after another, the engines is forced to pulled back to idle due to unknown issues by the pilots at the time . Unbeknownst to them, sea water infused jet fuel broke the filter and the contents of the filter pours out and clogs the engines . Engine No 1 was able to add power but it then jammed at 74% power and was forced to land at 230 kts. 57. People are injured, but no one was dead.(please correct me if I’m wrong)

This story is incredible, the crew were exemplary. Staying calm, thinking of alternative solutions to attempt and generally having really good cockpit resource management. True heroes.

Hello I am from Hong Kong what I want to say about this is that Cathy Pacific in my opinion is better than some chinese airlines. My biggest impression is that their food is extremely delicious.
