Motorists are not by law to pay fines on the spot during a roadblock

You are heading home, suddenly, flashing blue lights and a police officer orders you pull to the side of the road... There is a roadblock.

Do you know your basic rights when you get stopped at a roadblock?

A new term has recently been coined 'Luxury Roadblock'...
Are they only pulling over expensive vehicles for traffic fines?

I have a "Luxury" vehicle that I practically NEVER get stopped in, and a 22-year old vehicle In Excellent Condition, that NEVER drives past a Road Block. I recently told one JMPD member when he stopped me, that "I am laughing because I expected you to stop me. I never pass a Road Block in this car". Told him, I am picking up something around the corner, will be passing by here in less than 5 minutes. On my return, one of his colleagues stopped me. He came running & laughing as well, that he sees what I was talking about 😂

He is not being honest, he should be a politician. Roadblocks are more for making money rather than anything else. He is not being honest.

I live on Witkoppen Rd. Roadblocks are there every day, and the JMPD will NEVER pull off taxis, taking shortcuts and driving over red traffic lights to squeeze in. Law-abiding citizens in luxury vehicles will get pulled off, but never the lawless taxi drivers. Makes one think, doesn't it.

I have experienced this first hand multiple times, at night they've stopped me numerous times because of my LED lights, here's the kicker, when they realise I'm a motswana they say we are stingy and let me go 😂😂😂

As someone who drives a Renault Kwid, I can agree that police stop luxury vehicles. I get stopped multiple times a week 😡

They stop the usual suspects. Luxury vehicle owners in restaurant places usually are the ones to be caught on DUI charges whilst low income cars usually are the ones to have road worthy infractions. Middle class vehicles are a sweet spot and hardly get pulled over. It's not personal but a winning formula for cops. In my 16 years of driving I have only been pulled aside once, and that was a Covid lockdown roadblock

What I'd like to know, how is it ok to have a massive roadblock 300m from the biggest intersection in Jhb (highway and Winnie Mandela) where the traffic lights have not worked in a year at least and the JMPD just carry on regardless. Please can you guys also have a discussion on this? Too many major intersections where lights have not worked in ages. Not to mention the "traffic directors" begging at these intersections. It is so dangerous and the number of accidents is rising. 😢

I got stopped during a roadblock last month in Pretoria by the National Traffic Police. I was told that I had to settle a certain amount of my fines. They forced me to pay R1600. Never again!

I drive a performance car.

I was stopped and told : you are in a fancy car - we had to stop you. I was asked to step out (it was night time) and searched and shouted at by a female officer for no reason.

On the way to China Mall from M2, it is every day. On the entrance/exit to Spruitview from N3, it is about 3 times a week .
