The Guitar Style of Pat Metheny Part 1 "The Early Years"

This episode is the first of a multi-part series on the guitar style of Pat Metheny from the years 1975-1984. In this episode I discuss the early Metheny sound and how here achieved it. I also explore the early stylistic traits of his playing that used Jazz, Rock and Country elements to create his eclectic sound.

I don't know what's more impressive Pats music or your interpretation of his music. Your ability to analyze is beyond measure

When Pat Metheny picked up a guitar the world changed for ever. He has everything. People have made whole careers on only 1/100th of what he will show in one song. And he puts it into every song. Find him and listen.

Takes a genius to explain (simply) the genius of Pat Metheny

Pat Metheny is the most expressive musician ever. Uplifting and positive feel like an endless blue sky.

I was born to be a "guitar guy" in Indianapolis and was performing by mid-60's, and have always been pretty damn good at it. But, I met Pat, and Mick, and Gary in the summer of 1973 ( stage band camp in Normal, Illinois ) through family in Boston ( before I went to Berklee ), and immediately realized that there were true wizards in the room. The guitar fingerboard never looked the same to me from then on, even though I spent MUCH time on nylon strings and "Segovia Repertoire". Memorization IS challenging, especially in Baroque Music, but not as instantaneously creative as these guys, Pat in particular. Lucky we all are to have such people in the world. Really lucky.

First it was Bach, then Steely Dan, now Pat Metheny - I'm so glad I've subscribed!

Rick, I am watching this the day following the night Lyle Mays died. I was PMG's interpreter on their first tour of Poland, back in the 1980s. My heart breaks

The more you get into the details, the more you realize how geniously Pat's playing is. Very big stuff.

You sir are unbelievably talented. To cover and explain the genius of Pat is amazing. For me you have unlocked the many style techniques that has haunted my dreams since I first heard Pat in my teenage years in the 70’s. I’ve been playing on stage now for over 45 years but only the blues only to be secretly wishing I could play like Pat. Thank you so much for your work and ability to teach us what’s behind the curtain.

I got to meet Pat back in '93 in Gainesville, FL. My college guitar teacher was a student of Pat's at Berklee back in the 70's, and was able to get Pat to come talk to our guitar class! Cool stuff!

This is probably the first "how Pat Metheny plays" video I've seen that might actually say something about how Pat Metheny plays.

Sir, you deserve 500, 000 subscribers monthly.... I’ve been a Metheny minion all my life, being myself a serious guitar aficionado I always felt alone in my musings about his playing, melodies, solos etc etc, now I found a fantastic/unique teacher who opens a new dimension on his music, I can’t tell you enough how grateful I am for this gift, you added a 5th dimension of enjoyment of this wonderful music.. thanks..thanks

I'm not even a guitar player (I'm a drummer) but even I found this fascinating. Obviously, it takes one superb technician and musician to dissect the playing of another.Obviously, Pat Metheny was/is a prodigy, being able to grasp all kinds of scales and such at such an early age. He is one of my favorite artists, period. Many thanks for posting this and the others.

How does one summon the time in a busy life like yours even in youth to pick up so much knowlege in so many diffrent styles and learn to produce and write a hit song. Ive seen teachers write down on a blackboard how Charlie Parker plays but you have actually injested the exact solos of so many players and can demonstrate them like nothing. Incredible!

Dude, you f**king rock!!!! That was a quality breakdown of one of the greats, and executed brilliantly. I'm so glad you've come to YouTube to share your skills and knowledge - always an education to watch!

Metheny is the man! "Phasedance" is one of his greatest tunes of all-time. Your interview with him was excellent, too.

Rick, wow! I am just amazed and stunned with all of the talent, wisdom and knowledge that you possess. I know you have worked your are off to get where you are.... The interesting thing about you is, is that your not merely a good "technician" or sole "cerebral", you actually embody ALL of this with ease and it comes across easily to us listeners and viewers! Deepest gratitude.
