Supporters and campaign workers of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance gather to await results on election night.

Strong signs of discontent with the state of the nation do not bode well for Kamala Harris’s chances, early exit polls of voters indicated.

Fox News polling of Americans who have voted found that 70 per cent thought the country was on the wrong track and 30 per cent on the right track. The numbers from CNN’s exit poll were even worse: 29 per cent of voters described themselves as “angry” about the way things are going and a further 43 per cent were “dissatisfied”.

Conventional wisdom suggests that a candidate like Harris, a figurehead of the current administration, would struggle to win in such conditions. No incumbent party in the modern era has won with such adverse ratings.
