In Flora & Faith Pt 2: Fruit Like a Fig Tree, Walking The Text Content Director Brad Nelson unpacks the story of Jesus cursing the fig tree. There are plenty of stories in the Bible that can leave you wondering, “What in the world is going on here?” And Jesus cursing the fig tree is a case in point. But strange as it seems, everything Jesus said and did was intentional, and understanding how fig trees bear fruit is key to appreciating the sobering meaning of this story.

Over the course of a growing season, fig trees produce a series of fruit beginning with early figs called “phage.” In the Hebrew Scriptures, God likened Israel to early figs. Though small and of a low quality, early figs are evidence that more and better fruit is sure to follow. What’s more, fig trees are unique in that they produce this early fruit before leaves appear on the tree. So, where there are leaves, there ought to be fruit.

As we’ll see, Mark, the gospel writer, utilizes a suggestive literary technique to connect the fig tree to the fraudulent faith Jesus finds in the temple. By the end of Flora & Faith Pt 2: Fruit Like a Fig Tree, you’ll understand why small acts of faithfulness can keep us from living live that are all leaves and no fruit.

The fig tree symbolizes the House of Judah. The 2 baskets. One, good figs, the other so bad they cannot be eaten. The baskets came back from Babylon, the Jews and the Kenites who were the scribes. Someone got cursed here forever.
