Admitting these mistakes and informing us is awesome and why I love this channel. Honest, informative, and giving us tips to save us the same heartache.

Found it! A breba (breva)fig develops on last year’s stems. The main crop forms on new growth

I live in Tucson Arizona and my family has had a Black Mission fig for a long time and never had issues ripening both a breba and main crop each year. The former usually around mid to late July then the main around late August. The breba crop tended to be about 1/2 or 1/3 the size of main crop which still meant hundreds of figs off a single tree.

I love figs. I have a miniature in a big pot on my patio. The birds usually get the fruit before I do. Ha! Which is fine. It’s a beautiful plant for the patio.

Please explain this a bit more Anthony, I’m sure other people than me would love to know and learn about this. Thank you and love your channel, I have learned so much from you! Best regards from 🇫🇮

I'm in Las Vegas and brebas excel here. You're severely missing out if you prune all your breba producers where it's hot and dry.

Some varieties also have brebas that are superior to main crop, or only produce brebas like Desert King and K-7-11.

I live in Portland Oregon I have around 50 fig trees, most give me brebas and main crops. I do have trees where my season isn't long enough. Thinking about selling them to lower states

My black mission and a green fig a family member brought from Lebanon both had brebas this year here in New Bern. They seem to be holding on so far. We’ll see. My first year with any breba figs.

I live in the Seattle area and I can never get the main crop to ripen. I have three varieties now: Brown Turkey, Calimyrna and Black Mission. I get a big breba crop but right now in December the trees are covered with unripe figs from the main crop. Should I pick them to encourage the breba crop? Is there a variety I can grow that will have a main crop that ripens?

Can you suggest any other variety that does as well in the PNW as the Desert King?

I still don't understand what you are labeling "breva" crop. I'm in zone 9 Florida. Does this warning include my area????

I think you should reconsider advising people to not grow breba. Breba can be of excellent quality depending on the variety, and the overall production of breba is also highly dependent on the variety. My Violette de Bordeaux and Desert King are loaded with brebas in my zone 8a southeast climate. They provide dozens of great tasting figs a month or two before I am able to get main crop. If you really like figs, I highly encourage people to grow the two I mentioned for a great season extension.

Man, I gotta say, I do love my brebas though. Especially Olympian brebas

So that’s why I have dozens of brebas on my tree!! I never got around to pruning it this winter. Can I prune now or is it too late? (I’m in PA outside of Philly)

Comforting to know I’m not the only one who has the experience of losing brebas that SHOULD be ripening because I SAW them, but now seem to have disappeared! On the other hand, I did harvest a few big Violette de Bordeaux brebas early this summer, and then with the extreme heat and drought this summer in So Cal, that tree dropped nearly all of its MAIN crop! 2024 has been a rough year for gardeners in many parts of the USA.

What if you only have a fig tree just starting and only has one stem do you prune that?
