Making a WAGO CONNECTOR Waterproof 💦

Here’s an easy way to make a Wago 221 inline connector waterproof.

We’ve over sleeved the Wago connector with adhesive lined heat shrink tubing. The shrink ratio of the tube doesn’t match the wire, so we pinch it with pliers while the adhesive is soft.

This is proof that having fancy tools and connections does not equal competence.

If you trully want to make a good waterproof connection why not use a wago gelbox ? That’s what i would use on something critical.

Friday afternoon and the wholesalers are shut, you are in the middle of nowhere then maybe, but come on chaps this is rough as a badgers ass

If you are going to do that why not solder and heat shrink? Or crimp cap and heat shrink?

Not the way I'd have done it.. Prefered option would be an actual marine crimp but if a wago and heatshink are what you have: Use a smaller heatshink on either side of the wago, just a 15 mm ring to bring the cable diameter up to the shrink range of you outer heatshink then apply the outer..

Can you show us the datasheet from the heatshrink manufacturer, specifying ip69 when used over a wago inline 221?

At that point just buy the heat shrink with solder in it.

i've always wanted to know how to squish those heatshrink things over wires when they are too small
i've always ended up overlapping some smaller heatshrink over the top, that way looks a lot easier

I would be interested to see that left live outside or even immersed for some time. Will you do that? Say 6 months? I've found water wicks in as the glue isn't 100% waterproof so certainly wouldn't use mains voltage.

Would work as a temporary measure. Not really enough mechanical protection to be any use outside

As the dog said when he wiped his ass with sandpaper:

What's that clear plastic on the ends?

What IP rating would you give this? What is the pliers used for, to give it thoses little tails?

Silly - why not use much cheaper marine grade butt connectors with solder and heat shrink already built in?

Not maintenance free, so how do you maintain it?

I almost lost my lunch. If a sparky ever goes to this lenghts to make a waterproof connection please speak to nhs, you have health condition

Not all heat shrink wrap is waterproof! Make sure you are using the appropriate type with the sticky stuff on the inside.

Wago is for easy clip and off, if you want to seal why wago?

Am I seeing this correctly, you melted the plastic of a wago into the heatshrink tube? Is that actually a thing?! I have seen people adding silicone around a joint then heatshrinking it until the silicone oozes out which seems reasonable, but this seems a bit whacky. Maybe it's not whacky at all?

Correct way it to layer heat shrink on the wire longest pieces starting first until your largest heat shrink will seal against what is on the wire
