Which device or combination of devices is best for your creative process. In this video, I want to talk about the features and benefits of each device, but more than anything I want to talk about the usefulness of each device because I think this is what will ultimately help you make the right buying decision!

I don't believe there is a perfect answer to this question. There is not a one fits all solution. I think that whoever is looking for one of these devices has a specific lifestyle that would fit well with one of these choices.

Let's jump into the content talking about the Wacom Tablet Vs Touch Screen Laptops Vs iPads and see which device is right for you.

1. iPad
The iPad paired with the Apple Pencil is a great device for anyone who finds themselves commuting by train, bus, Uber, or plane. Basically, they are on the go a lot and they have time to sketch, and brainstorm ideas. It is a small device for tight spaces making it the prime candidate for this lifestyle.

Apple has done a great job with their pen (Pencil) making it responsive to pressure sensitivity and palm recognition. From a specification standpoint, this is a very well engineered product. The way technology is today I am not concerned about any of these products being good enough to purchase. They are all excellent choices. the question is which one fits your needs.

2. Wacom Tablet
The Wacom Tablet is something I am most confident using and what I mean by confident is I like the feel and experience of using a Wacom Tablet. It is a very intuitive device. It is a device I have used for a long time and it has been very beneficial to me. There are a few big reasons that I like the Wacom over the Apple iPad / Pencil combination.

The first reason is posture. A lot of times when we are using touchscreen devices we can easily get gravitate towards bad posture. This is dangerous. Spending hours and hours at a desk and behind a screen is dangerous enough as it is, but then add in hunching over a screen and you multiply the damage. A Wacom Tablet allows you to retain appropriate posture as you work.

The second reason I like this device so much is that it has a very natural feel when you slid the Pen across the surface of the Wacom Tablet. IT resists similar to how the paper would resist it is not stick rather coarse. So it mimics that paper like feel we all adore. The Wacom Tablet is an excellent Hybrid between sketching digitally and on a piece of paper.

3. Touch Screen Laptops
The third option you have is using a laptop with a pen to draw directly on the screen. I believe this is something that works best with a 2-in-1 style computer because if you do not have a 2-in-1 laptop you will find it kind of awkward to sketch on a screen that does not fold down flat to your desk or can be easily cradled in your arm as you are drawing.

The best way to use the Pen and Laptop combination is someone who works in many different locations like a coffee shop, different office locations, and traveling to onsite jobs. Because it is difficult to lug a Wacom Tablet around the Laptop and Pen combination is a lot easier to carry with you.

Uh tbh drawing directly onto something is more "natural" cuz isn't that what pen and paper is like?

I'm trying to animate using a Lenovo laptop with touch screen and included stylus. The sensitivity is great and miles ahead of a cell phone but it is so difficult to animate with. Like you said, I cant see what I'm doing, and having to look down gets tiresome real quick. It also keeps detecting my palm. I turned on the option to not detect your hand when using the pen, but you still have to touch the pen on the screen first.

I only have my Lenovo 2 in 1. My stylus pen is ok but not pressure sensitive so feel I need to upgrade my setup

I have a Surface Pro 7, and while it is amazing, there is definitely a different feel to using my Wacom Intuos Pro - the latter is much smoother, and the Surface tablet feels like there's a tiny bit of latency which is a lot more noticeable when the drawing is supposed to keep up with a pen that's actually right on it. I also agree that the Wacom feels more like paper than a big glossy oleophobic screen.

I'm curious if a 2-in-1 laptop can potentially replace a wacom screen device such as the cintiq pro for digital painting in Photoshop? Got to have a computer anyway, and the cintiq costs as much as another computer on top. Painful for the budget! But need something effective as well. Toughts?

I have this kind of similar question, though my real main focus is Photoshop. I do think about 2-in-1 laptop since I can fold it all the way to the back and make it a tablet, and I also do think of using a Wacom if I have my own custom PC rig.

In the end, Acer's Switch 7 definitely wins my heart. It's the only Surface Pro 6 rival to have a dedicated Nvidia graphic card despite only using MX150, but the implementation of Wacom EMR like Surface Pro 2 and Samsung Galaxy Book caught my attention.

So, I've only worked on a touchscreen laptop, but it's not the most comfortable thing. I find it helpful to just hold it in your lap, but because it may get too hot, it's not really good to use it for too long. The only advantage of using a laptop is the software it can support (over iPads) and the fact that if you already have one before getting into digital art, you're saving money using it.

I already have a desktop so I'd rather purchase an ipad pro
And I've seen iPads linking with computers through the app "astropad" which literally works like a wacom tablet
And i came across designers who use the iPad version of "affinity designer" which runs completely on an iPad and some of them even recommend it

(And excuse me for my bad english :-)

I haven't tried the way you do it, but I have to admit that drawing on the screen is kind of hard to do it for long periods of time, my back hurt a little after.

I use a surface book to draw with surface pen on autodesk sketchbook. I do notice that the point on the screen is not accurate compare to the point of the pen, im not sure if this is because of the program or the pen and the touch screen itself. Please comment if you have the same problems with me. Thanks

I have a surface pro from school and got paint.net on it. Idk but I don’t think paint has different brushes so maybe it’s just cause of the drawing app but I don’t like it. If I had some better things to work with then maybe I’d like it better but since it’s a school computer I’m not allowed to get other apps. I’d say the whole feel of drawing on it is a bit awkward for me but it’s probably the same as drawing on an iPad. Great vid this was exactly what I was looking for since I’m looking to buy a tablet but I’m not sure if it’s good

I'm a graphic designer undergraduate, currently making my final practice. I work 8 hours straight and I have been experiencing some difficulties regarding my performance and comfort on doing my job without having pains at the end of the day in my right hand, shoulder and back pain. This helped me a lot in making a decision on buying an active pen for my 2 in 1 or buying a Wacom. Thank you!

This video was very helpful and answered many of my questions, although I still have a question regarding to my current situation and I would like your opinion on it.
I am going to start out with digital drawing and have absolutely no equipment yet so with a drawing tablet like Wacom I need a labtop anyway so should I go with a graphics screen lab or should I get a cheap version of both separately and if I've decided to go with a wacom, what device will be the best option for that, like a desktop, computer, labtop, tv and any other possibilities that i would be glad to know about.
Thank u💕

I am curious about opinions from people who have used both a regular wacom and a 2-in-1 stylus for retouching photos in Lightroom or photoshop. Do people find it a game-changer to be able to use the pen directly on what you see with the 2-in-1? I wonder if perhaps it might be better to use a separate traditional wacom so that you don't have your hand in the way ? am also curous if a spearate tablet is better so that you cna also us eth keyboard with your other hand for keyboard shortcuts that accompany your stylus hand( and with 2-in-2 the keyboard would be folded back...)

Nice video to decide right device. My question is bit different:
If someone is deciding to buy a laptop is it important to have simple touch screen in a laptop for efficiency? I mean how far touch screen helps to do design jobs faster?
