Gynecomastia ('gyno') is the technical name for man boobs. It's a medical condition characterized by swollen male breast tissue caused by a hormonal imbalance. Aaron Marino of alpha m. describes how the small breast buds behind the nipples can develop. It's not dangerous but it's embarrassing.

It's most common with teen boys and men who take steroids. If you are taking steroids and you go off, the puffiness will shrink. If you stay on steroids long term, however, your body doesn't re-regulate and the breast tissue can become hard. The tissue will have to get cut out.

For teenage boys, puberty hits the body. Gyno can happen, and it typically occurs for 6 months to 2 years. It will go away. However, sometimes it will hang out too long and the tissue will harden. In this situation, a consultation with a plastic surgeon is advised. Alpha displays examples and discusses.

Weight loss helps to drastically reduce gyno. A working out helps to balance everything out too. You can also wear a tight tank or undershirt under your garments. Size down TWO sizes. It will be tight and compress. Compression garments for men are available as well (Spanx).

I'm 18 years old and almost convinced I have gyno. These things stick out so much if I put a bra on and took a few pics I could get a decent following on instagram. Now I'm gonna admit, im pretty overweight. 6' and 225 pounds. Ive done some weightlifting in the past and have recently tried to slim down (its kind of working). But I hope i really am just fat.

I'm 22 years old, and have had the man boobs since I was 13 years old. Still got them. I lost so much weight since my high school years (was 230ibs - now 170ibs) and STILL have them. I am currently trying a strict cardio workout plan with diet, and hoping to get results by the end of the month. If this does not work, I am most definitely going in to speak to a specialist and see what they can do for me, with surgery. It sucks.. SO much. Having to deal with a self-image, and having to get comfortable around others, it's really difficult. Who ever else is out there dealing with this, you're not alone. It is so tough, but nothing is impossible. I'm going to achieve my goal to shed the man tits.

I have the kind of mild gyno that came with puberty and never left. It never really bothered me until I started working out because now it makes the chest muscles I've worked my ass off for look fatter and less defined, and I feel like people who lift will think I got it from steroids.

Hi, my husband underwent gynecomastia about a year ago. He has been ashamed of his body since puberty. I tried to persuade him several times to go to a clinic with me to ask about this operation. But he was ashamed. And I understand that. That's why I made a secret action and made an appointment at the clinic in Czech Republic where we were heading for a vacation. He was quite surprised but happy. I was afraid of his reaction but the plastic surgeon at the Forme clinic in Prague was really kind and he explained everything to us. If you have the same problem, undergo this surgery. My husband was relieved.

I'll start by saying, I am a physician. I think it's important for it to be clarified that the MAJORITY of gynecomastia cases are IDIOPATHIC and actually have NOTHING to do with hormonal imbalance. It's also important to note that the majority of gynecomastia cases DO NOT go away.

Aaron...
Props to you for addressing an issue such as this. I wish I got to read a post like this when I was growing up! I suffered from this. Humor ended up helping me deal with this. If I had people in my circle telling me to keep working out (BTW he's right-exercise does help. A LOT.), I would have never had something like GM getting in my way like it did. Thanks again!!

I have this. I'm 31 and this started more or less when I was 11. I lost weight, run daily (10 years now), I am thin now (I was a bit overweight), and yes, the size has gone down a lot. But finding clothes is hard! I recommend the normal vest (which I wear often in summer)...mine is quite elasticated, BUT it's not a gynecomastia vest. I tried one of those before, seemed like a miracle, and instantly went to the shopping centre to start buying some summer clothes..2 hours into it, I could hardly even move the clothes on the clothing rack...I was having trouble breathing...I had to go home straight away...and it was the right size for me, too. I still had trouble breathing during the days afterwards. I accurately did the chest measurement using their measuring chart before purchasing the vest. I have thought about surgery but I wanted to put all of that money into something more important (that I'd wanted to do for years, linked to my life objective). So it was about priorities in the end. Maybe I'll do it one day, but for now I am carrying on with the normal elasticated vest, and considering going to tailors to make the clothes fit better (because small is the right size for my body, only that it's too tight on my chest, and medium is the right size on my chest but too large for the rest of my top half). I am thinking to buy my clothes cheap and get them adjusted a little. In any case I'm not clothes addicted, so I wouldn't be doing this kind of thing every weekend ahahah. For a fashion lover it would possibly be a very expensive and tiring lifestyle...

People think you just workout and eat good and it's gone. That's not true at all. I had them from hormonal reasons, I was in shape and healthy. The only way to get rid of it is through surgery which I had. You have tissue under the nipple that can't be "burnt" away from workouts, it has to be removed through surgery.

i learned so much about man's health in this channel, something that no body gives a shit about in this feminist world where 90% of suicides are men and most cancer deaths are men :(, thanks you alpha <3
