In this episode of Stories of Obesity, I’m joined by Cindy, who bravely shares her lifelong journey with obesity, starting when she was just 5 years old. Cindy’s story is one that many of us can relate to—facing criticism about her weight and food choices throughout her childhood and beyond. Though she went on to have a successful career, the shame and blame surrounding her weight followed her for many years.

Now, at 67, Cindy has found empowerment through understanding that obesity is a chronic, multifactorial disease. One of the most powerful moments in her journey was realizing that internalized weight bias had shaped much of her life, and that her weight struggles were not her fault.

I hope Cindy’s story resonates with you and brings awareness and inspiration to anyone navigating the complexities of obesity.

Cindy is great and real. Her answers to what people may say resonate with me, as she is the only one who knows what you have been through. Thanks for sharing. As usual, great information

Thank you for sharing your story, Cindy. It could be my own story in so many ways. I am 73 and had gastric sleeve surgery when I was 65. I have been on Ozempic for two weeks and am so hopeful. Your story has inspired me to not give up. Congratulations on your wonderful success.

Cindy!!! Grrrrl, we need to talk! If you have not seen my interview with Dr. Dan, I encourage you to watch when you have a few minutes. I mean, anyone that remembers Ayds Candies is my kinda gal. I also had an RNY, in 2001, in San Diego. I did great with it, but then at 2 years, began eating around it and regained it all, plus more. I've been on GLP-1s for 2.5 years (first Trulicity, then Mounjaro, some tirzepatide compounding, and now Ozempic because insurance is making me). My diabetes is in remission, all labs are amazing, and I have lost 255 lbs. I was always the "fat one, " too. I am thinking you are a kindred spirit.

I am SO thrilled for you and your changes and incredibly proud of your lifetime of stamina. One thing I have learned is, even with GLP-1s, is we will still have challenges. I have about 30 lbs of skin that needs to be removed and probably never will be, but I will take the trade off... mobility and LIFE! What an amazing story you shared. Thank you! (And isn't being a grandmother the best thing EVER?!)

What a great interview. I really feel for Cindy as I too have been hurt by comments and actions of family members. I believe everyone who has had a lifelong struggle with their weight has as well. I’m so glad she has healed and found the support she needed. Inspiring story. ❤

The one thing you learn listening to all these obesity stories is how differently it works in different people. Some people it is more psychological and in some more physical or some combination of the two. It has a compounding effect on health where it may start off as excess fat and lead to other metabolic problems that compound the base problem making it more difficult to correct. These medications can really help people as they not only reduce appetite, but also help with some of the metabolic disorders that occur due to obesity. The drugs are amazing. Some people keep trying to sell the negative of the obesity drugs, but these drugs are one the greatest breakthroughs for obesity I've ever seen. They may not completely solve the problem, but definitely a step in the right direction and an extremely useful tool for medical professionals helping obese patients.

If your on 2mg of ozempic does that mean your having to pay for it all. I'm on it to and did great loosing 50lb in 3 or 4 months but then it just stopped when I couldn't keep going up to a higher dose. I'm in BC also
