Unfortunately, I got massively screwed over by this because I had undiagnosed conditions for years (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome & POTS) and was constantly either exhausted or ill- but since I didn't have a "reason" for missing school the school district was constantly on both my parents and me for literal years. It started in 6th grade when my immune system began attacking my own body and I broke out in welts, but the doctors "couldn't find out what was wrong" - later in life I figured out I've got Celiac Disease because I started to gain a lot of weight as well (most people loose weight, but I was part of the 40% of folks who did the opposite).

I think truancy laws for schools should not be a thing, if a kid is missing school it's either because something's wrong with their health, something is wrong in their life/home, or the school isn't putting in enough effort/have the funds to improve the school to get kids to show up.

It really screws over people with rare medical conditions and kids who struggle with mental health.

I think the Australian School System is sorta different.

Where you can miss a metric ton of days with no explanation and all you’d get is a slap on the wrist. Or if your parents call the School to explain why you’re away, no matter how long. You’re all good

My school threatened my parents because I had missed so much school because I was extremely depressed and anxious. Being threatened with homelessness basically (could not afford fines on a fixed income) did not help, but it did make me cry more; at school and at home

In November 2014, my grandmother took me to my home town and I was brought back around June 2015. Skipped school, didn’t go to jail, and didn’t have to repeat. Just did tutoring over the summer break and took a test to see if I had to retake the grade I ‘skipped’.
