How to connect a Turntable (record player) to Monitor Speakers

In this video I'm going to show you how to connect an old turntable to some Tannoy monitor speakers. The turntable is an old Sony PS-X30 and the speakers are Tannoy 501A. I'm pretty sure this procedure will work with any turntable that has RCA cables and any monitor speakers with 1/4 inch inputs.

Thanks for making this. Bought a nord stage 3 and I’m currently shopping for studio monitors. Just so happens that I also want to play my turntable through said monitors, and was wondering if I could use a small preamp instead of being forced to buy a full scale amp/receiver.

Literally spent two hours online, having phone calls with musicians to talk options, etc. etc.

Then I found this. Had my answer in 105 seconds 🤦‍♂️

Thanks again!

Thanks, very helpful. I guess can also route the preamp through a passive control unit into the active speakers?

Phono preamp is necessary even with powered active monitores (KRKs) ?

"Tannoy"?! Are you serious? This is a brand? 😂 Fuck, this is priceless! Never have I come across this brand before now.

Neighbor: Hey buddy, can you turn that shit down?!
Troy Shaw: Why would I do that? Then I can't 'Tannoy' you! 🤣🤣🤣

Nice vid. How do you control the volume when playing back directly through your monitors though?

Hey mate nice video does turntable have a built in pre amp?

This way I think you got a mono signal instead of stereo one. I believe there must be a better way to connect monitors

With this set up, does the sound only come out 1 speaker?

Do you connect the turntable to the Balanced connector or the Unbalanced in your monitors? thanks a lot

Why the preamp though? I have mine hooked directly up since they’re powered it works fine. Am I missing out on something?

Was thinking about getting monitors for my stereo and it should basically work the same way with just using thr tape out rca from the amp... right?
However, thanks for this video! How has this setup been working out for you so far?

If the turntable already has a built in preamp and you connect it to a phono preamp could you destroy the turntable permanetely?

Instead of the Pyle, I wanted the shielding of balanced lines and so I used a Little Bear MC2, and then 2 balanced XLR lines over to my computer/Scarlet-Focusrite 2i4 inputs. The Focusrite handles all my computer output to my powered speakers + routing the XLR lines from my LP player. Complicated but works for me. You don't really explain that in your video.
