this actually makes a lot of sense. football helmets are the cheapest here and designed to spread the impact clash between two people, not stop something piercing it. It was never even considered. Motorcycle helmets are designed for the outer shell to break easily. If the helmet takes the force and breaks, then your skull doesnt, but it does also have a stronger core specifically for flying debris (i.e stones/rocks/pebbles) as well as to spread the force better. A vietnam helmet is designed to glance bullets away, anything less than a direct shot never stood a chance

The big difference between the first two and the last one is that the first two are meant for defending against blunt for trauma (crashes, hits etc) while the vietnam helmet is made to not let bullets (mainly shrapnel) through. If you have a headache afterwards, it's a side effect of still being alive.

Makes sense. The first two are designed to prevent concussive forces/blunt force trauma. You're getting hit by someone's fist, or body up to asphalt or metal plates from a car. The Vietnam helmet is designed to stop projectiles like bullets. It's not meant to protect by crumpling or from blunt force. It's there to stop projectiles. Bullets. A lot of force concentrated on a small area.

My great uncle was 82nd airborne in WWII he told a story of a machine gun opening fire behind his men. The first round struck his BAR man in the neck and killed him. Another round struck the back of my uncles helmet slid up over and fell in his hand. He kept it in his pocket to remind himself of how close he came to death that day. So I believe a military helmet has the best chance of saving your life.
