Beware manga spoilers in this video!

The Stil Silver Arrow is one of the most infamous devices introduced in Bleach's story, but it's also a fascinating piece of the series' endgame. In this video, we take a look at the arrow itself, but also Ryuken Ishida's role in TYBW overall, to see how the Ishida family's conclusion came to be, and how Ryuken was instrumental in defeating Yhwach.

What did you think of the Stil Silver arrow? How could Ryuken's role in TYBW be improved? Let me know!

I really like the duality between Yhwach and Ryuken, the two most prominent Quincy father-figures in the story.
Yhwach's whole character is based on his status as a Quincy, while Ryuken rejects his identity as a Quincy.
Yhwach is known as the First Quincy, while Ryuken is the Last Quincy.
Both of them are motivated by a personal loss. Yhwach wants to avenge his father, while Ryuken wants to avenge his wife.
Both of them have very different ways of acting as parents. Yhwach sees his so-called children as nothing more then tools for him to use, but still considers himself as a benevolent parent.
Meanwhile, Ryuken acts cold and dismissive of Uryu's desire to be a Quincy, but he still helped him when he needed it and trusted him with the weapon that would help them defeat Yhwach.
Yhwach wanted to create a world without death, while Ryuken is a doctor, because he has dedicated his life to helping the living.
I really like how Kubo made the two Quincy father-figures be such fitting parallels to each other, given their respective roles in the story.

Ryuken creating this legendary weapon and then Uryu unleashing it against Yhwach symbolically represents justice for all the people Yhwach stomped on and snuffed out to get where he stood on. Particularly his fellow Quincies.

I just like to imagine that Ryuken showed up at Isshins door and asked "Hey, I'm about to go give my son this arrow so he can help us get it back in blood. Wanna come and watch, maybe get some closure on the Masaki thing?"

Hopefully the anime will give this dude a bigger role. Because man it really felt like he was supposed to do something major in the final battle and not stay on the sideline. I mean he did create the arrow that lead to Ywach downfall, but boy did Kubo screw this guy over. Same with Ukitake and Isshin.

I remember wondering, when I read it originally, if the arrowhead wasn't just the silver from Katagiri, but also from Masaki and potentially all the mixed blood servants of the Ishida household who died. They could then add a new flashback scene, where Ryuken explains to Ishin what really happened to their wives that night and his plan for revenge.

It's head cannon, but you could really flesh out the relationship between Ryuken, Uryu and Soken using Katagiri's death. Katagiri dies and in his grief Ryuken desperately searches for what killed her, even to the point of carving up her corpse and traumatizing Uryu. After discovering the silver, Ryuken confronts Soken and demands to know why he didn't warn them. That they could have done something/anything, and now Uryu is suffering and motherless because of him. His wife's death and this sense of betrayal drives Ryuken away from the quincy life (remember he was 100% for the quincy before this), and Soken in his guilt take Uryu under his wing.

I quite like the idea of the arrow, I'd just be happy with it being setup a bit earlier. Kinda like how the anime has given setup for Uryu joining the sternritter

10:00 I am convinced we saw that scene before in the Anime. Actually that was the moment Uryu decided to reject his father and never become a doctor, because he could not understand why he was doing it.
Meaning when he _is_ a doctor 10 years later, it shows him accepting that moment.

Storytelling-wise I think that the Still Silver Arrow is a great idea and the way that Yhwach was defeated by his "sons born in the dark" is very cool. Both Ichigo and Uryu derived their motivations from the consequences of Yhwach's actions. Ichigo's will to protect comes from Masaki's death and Uryu infiltrates the Wandenreich to get revenge for Katagiri.

In the end Yhwach's decision come back to bite him and that's a pretty good way to defeat a villain.
The only problem with the arrow is that it was introduced so late. If they showed it and its abilities a lot earlier, I wouldn't have any problem with it.

This is why Bleach is so special. With each reread and video analysis either from you or other channels something new still uncovers or a deeper understanding of specific aspects. Thank you for all your hard work!
The silver arrow is a great concept. All the taking lives from Quincy backfired at Yhwach, an ultimate revenge from being bound to him in such cruel way. The world of Bleach being govern by Shinigami has it's flaws, and it is a curse that only Yhwach could change it. An idea that death would cease to exist is interesting, but looking at his character overall bet every soul would be bound to him in exchange, causing everyone to exist in a living nightmare of his omnipotence. Fate worse than death.

I just realized that the Silver could be a reference to Judas's betrayal of Jesus, especially with Ywhach being a sort of adaptation of Jesus Christ with the whole Son of God and time passing twice as quickly in the mortal realm compared to Soul Society, making the Blood War take place 2000 years before the start of the arc in the mortal realm's years.

Here's what i would have liked to see.
The Gerard fight happens as normal but towards the end Isshin and Ryuken step in. Ryuken uses the arrow to stop the miracle and Isshin uses his bankai to kill Gerard. Ryuken then explains that the arrow he had was not enough to stop Yhwach's power and needed a silver blood clot from some one powerful Like Gerard and he uses that to forge the arrow used to stop Yhwach.

The still sliver was foreshadowed early but there wasn’t that much build up to it, which can be good or bad in some cases. But for a majority of bleach fans, they thought it was a cheap way out of defeating Yhwach. With the added Uryu scenes in the upcoming cours, hopefully that can could develop it and satisfy those fans.

I really like that he gave it to Uryu. While it was his wife, it was Uryu's mother. So in the end, Yhwarch is brought low by the sons of two he took the mothers from, who are carrying the will and hopes of all the realms and people with them now to stop his plan.

I agree for the most part. I like that the arrow gives Ryuken a role in bringing down Yhwach and in turn avenging his wife. I just always thought it was so obvious how it should have ended. Ryuken shoots Ichigo with the arrow> Uryu uses antithesis between Ichigo & Yhwach> Yhwach uses yama's bankai while powers are down> Ishin uses his bankai or version of the final getsuga to carve a path for ichigo> Ichigo ends it.

It’s actually interesting how aizen brought the espada together in a similar manner to how Yamamoto brought the soul reapers together that would form the original gotei 13.

Just an interesting comparison I noticed.

I think the anime will expand on the arrow head.

I always knew Ryuken was really a good guy with a broken heart. I love the idea of this arrow. It’s literal karma for what Yhwach had done. It must have been unimaginably difficult for Ryuken to autopsy his own wife in order to understand what happened to her and who was responsible.

i think the still-silver arrow was a great device but the execution was rushed due to Kubo's waning health at the time. If he had more time to work it in it would've been a satisfying ending
