I choked when Brian said slavery disappeared in the middle ages. Brian loves the middle ages but like many things Brian has little real knowledge about what he speaks. slavery was replaced with serfdom. A medival peasant had to cling to rich lord for protection against other rampaging lords. Brian's utopia was a time of extreme violence and brutality.

Let me also point out that the slavery laws of the US South were *explicitly based on* the laws in the Old Testament.

The bible not only does NOT oppose slavery, it actively encourages and regulates it. I love it when religious people have to discard entire passages of their own book. It just goes to show how nonsensical all of this is.

The moment he called atheism "a creed" is when he lost any right to be listened to.

This goon got himself into a definition hole and couldn't pull himself out, so he went sideways and attempted to blame atheism on modern slavery 😮‍💨

"Is slavery bad?"

"Yes."

"Aha! But you've fallen into my trap! You see, I have decided that everyone else's moral framework is flawed despite having given hardly any thought even to my own!"

"Many atheists accuse the bible of being morally inferior for not condemning slavery _enough."_

Bullshit. That statement would have been accurate had he not been dishonest enough to add "enough."

"Slaves obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling"
-Epgesians 6:5

I don't see any condemnation of slavery here, do you?

I actually left a comment on Brian’s video a couple of weeks ago. I’m glad to see that you’re addressing it. I wondered why Brian would even think to ask some random atheist if they thought slavery was wrong and when they agreed that slavery was wrong, Brian would want to know what the atheist means by “wrong.” My answer of course would be, I don’t know, Brian. You asked the question. What do YOU mean by wrong?” Is it “wrong” to intentionally run red traffic signals? Is it “wrong” to intentionally stab people you happen upon for no good reason? Society has has pretty good idea of what is right or good and what is wrong or not good. No empirical data required. Brian’s entire premise is just “wrong.”

Reading a comment on the original video, I can now sum up Brian's entire argument:

"But, like, what does *mean* mean, man ?"

Does religion create arrogant, dishonest, and emotionally manipulative hypocrites, or does it just provide them a safe place to flourish?

It takes a lot of hubris to tell atheists they can't defend their opposition to slavery, implying one needs to be a theist to do so, and then use the term "doesn't go far enough in it's condemnation of slavery" in refference to the Bible, a text that literally never condemns slavery, gives rules on how it should be undertaken, and literally orders slaves to obey their masters, "even the cruel ones".

Funny how he had to straw man the ACTUAL atheist argument about slavery in the Bible so he could pretend to have the moral high ground !

His great unanswered question is slavery wrong. If you can not say slavery is wrong you are a monster. Atheists are not trying to justify slavery but Christians are because the bible promotes and regulates slavery. Brian has out done himself with his stupidity.

"That's bad because it's circular! But it's not actually circular, which is also bad!"

I also love how his whole argument is to try and weakly poke holes into the definition of secular morality, all the while the God he believes in, according to his chosen Holy Book, murdered every single first born in the whole of Egypt because someone wouldn't do something he was using Divine Mind Control to prevent them from doing, or had Jephthah literally forced to make his daughter into a human sacrifice, despite the pain and anguish caused to both the father and the literal teen girl he explicitly forced them to murder as a personal offering to his own greatness.

He thinks God, who in the Bible randomly murders children whenever he gets the chance to, is somehow the superior source of morality, despite him constantly violating his own rules simply so he can show off, which is the LITERAL reason given for why he has to stop the Pharaoh from doing what he supposedly wants him to do, then punishing the entire country for it.

Oh my god (sic) Brian has not heard of the feudal system. Just because they weren’t actually called ‘slaves’ in the Middle Ages but ‘serfs’ he must somehow think everybody was free. No, Mr Holdsworth, unless you were born noble, or got very lucky, you belonged to the local lord, and, within reason, he could do what he liked to you.

I don't think he knows what definitions are. Definitions exist purely in the realm of language, and definitions are meant to be tautological. He seems to want a universal standard for declaring any random act or practice to be wrong. I don't have one, but neither does he.

Brian, do YOU want to be a slave? Are you married? Would you want your spouse to be a slave? Do you have children? Would you want your children to be slaves? How hard is it to conclude that slavery is wrong if you would not want yourself or anyone you care about to be enslaved?

Jesus! If Brian ever debated Jordan Peterson, everyone in the audience would wonder what the hell they were talking about. Throw in "Low bar" Bill Craig and you've got the three unwise men, babbling on about absolutely nothing. Even the cameraman is starting to zone out and lose focus.

Its funny he complains about us not being able to define wrong consistently when their own definition of good is inconsistant
