Is there any other way to solve this without substitution? What if the substitution is not given..how can one figure it out?

How did you know what is the correct substitution? Besides that I understood everything else... thanks for the help!

Hey, I was just curious to know how far did you study mathematics at university? And how good of a preparation is further maths for that? Because I feel the A-Level maths and further maths syllabi are very dull and not yet advanced maths, as in they are not good indicator for a students ability, failing to separate the good from the very good.

Thanks but I would like to think you were able to do other things other than listen to me all day long!

Would differentiating on dx/dy make it harder to solve?

You missed the solution y = 0 (the constant function zero). You lost that possibility when you divide both sides of your equation by z^3, which means you assumed that z is not zero. But since z = y / x, that means you assumed that y is not zero. It's a good idea to examine your derivation to check for such assumptions.

I studied maths and further maths at A-level but that was some 45 years ago and the syllabus was a lot different then to what it is today. I felt reasonably well equipped to do maths at uni at that stage. Have you tried the STEP papers or AEA papers as they may be more stimulating for you and push you further if you are looking to do maths at uni?
