I use an amazing lawnmower, simple & light. None of that complex stuff, just the engine hard connected to the blade. When it got dull I just took an angle grinder & resharpened the blade myself. Hopefully, this lawnmower lasts forever.

How do the intake and exhaust valves open/close with the right timing?

My mower idled down and back up repeatedly. I found a weak butterfly spring. Simply adjusted the tension tab that the spring attaches to, and yipeee! Idle became constant and I was "off to the races".
