I think a huge one you missed is that all the dwarves know about the ring in the book because Bilbo tells them

Having read the Hobbit, I can say there is only one difference between the book and the movies. The book tells the story strictly from Bilbo’s perspective. The movies tell a more complete story. Case in point: BOTFA. The book doesn’t tell of the battle very much. Bilbo is hit on the head and the story starts again with him waking up after the battle. The movie tells of the battle in detail. Also: the necromancer. He is only mentioned in the book at the end when Gandalf tells Bilbo why he disappeared at times. He tells Bilbo that he had helped kick out the necromancer at Dol Guldur. The necromancer isn’t revealed as Sauron until the Fellowship of the Ring. The movies explore Gandalf’s quest in detail. Legolas in the movies was a logical decision. He is a wood elf. The Dwarves did get captured by them in the story. It’s only logical to have Legolas in the movies since this happens 60 years before LOTR.

Here are some other changes
1. In the movie, when Bilbo meets Gandalf and finally recognizes him, he only remembers his fireworks, but in the book he remembers a lot more about Gandalf.
2. When Bilbo wakes up the next morning after the company arrived at his home, he is happy the are gone and wants to forget the experience. Gandalf then shows up and shows him the contract for the company that he should sign. This is in the book but not the movie.
3. when the company is captured by trolls, Gandalf copies the dwarves voices to distract them. In the books, this isn't shown.

4. In the book, the goblins in Goblin Town sing a song to the dwarves when they are dragged there and the orcs sing when they trap the dwarves in trees.
5. In the movie, the eagles don't appear to be able to speak but in the book they can.

I just listened to the audiobook today and I’ve got to say that both the book and the movies were terrific in their own right, and that I don’t think I could choose a favorite, but I’ll probably be more likely to rewatch the movies because it seems a bit more in depth and it has great acting.

I think adding the LOTR characters makes sense, I think Tolkien would've added a few of them if he made The Hobbit after LOTR, or something.

The book is way better than the 3 part Jackson Mega-strosity. The Hobbit is the most readable of the JRR Tolkien Middle Earth stories.

The book was so much better than the inflated trilogy of movies. I especially detest how the studio insisted there be a romance in the movies so women would be interested. The story is interesting enough without them adding a stupid romance that would not have happened!

Here's the thing that confuses me. In the book Azog is Bolg's father and they referred to as goblins yet serve Sauron. So according to the books are the Orcs and Goblins the same or are they like the movies where they are different?

I'm so glad you were not hating on the changes. I just re-whatched the entire 6 movies and they still hold up. Loved the hobbit and loved LOTR films.

I was realizing that Legolas wasn’t even in the book, or at least he wasn’t mentioned in the book.

Idk why people got so mad about Legolas being in the movie. There was nothing really saying he couldn't have been there, not enough interactions between him and Frodo in the films to say he would've said he knew Bilbo, not even that many interactions between him and Bilbo... it's just good fun that hurts no one

I LOVE the movies, but the book will always always always be the BEST

It’s craY how in most cases the book always has more information than the movie. This is the one case where i feel like the movie had much more depth and information in it.

The Hobbit should be faithfully adapted into a TV series, does anyone else agree.

I've watched and read 'The Hobbit' and I like the movies better as I get a better visual understanding than the books.

Could use more books to read. Kinda all I've got lately after my accident. Anyway, thanks for the opportunity and good luck to everyone else!

Wow. This is amazing. You've really done your research. How many times have you read through these series. This is interesting!

The book was what Tolkien intended. With the movies “The Hobbit” being released later rather than first as the book was, they extended it and made it much darker. It was OK, but they shouldn’t have done that. If you read my other comments you may see more reasons for me to feel that way.
