Quick tip told to me by a friend who specializes and raises octopi. When they get stressed and ink, when he zips into the corner and huddles up like that. Pretend you dont see him. It'll take the little guy a bit before he understands your a friendly giant monster who doesnt wanna eat him.

oh this dredged up a memory.

i used to volunteer at a bay-side nature center, where - one day, for some reason - they had decided to put a small octopus (in a translucent box) inside the usual display aquarium with a crab of similar size scuttling around the outside of that box.

Look at how he uses his color changing. He goes dark and prepares to ink then goes pale like a swipe fade as he moves to give the ink more visual continuity with his body and to disguise his escape even more. Its so cool
