Summary-
Changes in the sperm-
1. Capacitation- alteration in glycoprotein and seminal proteins that coat the spermatozoal head.
Occurs in the uterus
Increases motility

2. Acrosomal reaction- The sperm has specific protein that bind to the zona pellucida receptors, ZP3. Upon binding, acrosomal head opens releasing acrosin and proteases. This creates a hole in zona pellucida.

3. Fast block to polysperny- As the sperm touches the cell membrane, Na+ influx occurs .

4. Slow block to polyspermy- Smooth ER releases Ca2+ ions which activates lysosome to fuse with the cell membrane of occytes. Hydrolytic enzymes are secreted causing degradation of Zp3 proteins and hardeining of cell membrane.
