The fact that you essentially cannot beat Tyson on any modern plat panel display is good reason to get a CRT. Im a gamer, not a collector, so i have perfect controllers and a 5.1 spherex sound system with OG consoles and everdrives.

The cost of Saturn hardware, 32x hardware, NeoGeo anything, and TG16 hardware is now steering me towards a Mister.

The most important thing is not just the input lag. It’s the CRT itself. The old games where designed for CRT. The devs where experts on how to create sprites that look awesome on CRT. For example when they use dithering technique it makes a smooth color transition on CRT but in a modern screen with pixel perfect graphics it just doesn’t look like the way it’s intended. There are tons of examples you can find on Google on how sprites look different on CRT compared to modern displays. 🎉

I’m with you about wanted the games to look crisp. I feel the same way. The INLY reason why I still have a CRT to play on is because I still like to play Duck Hunt and other NES Zapper games. Without a CRT, it’s useless. The latency comes from the delay in the HD displays, not the method of converting the picture. Let’s pray someday HD TVs will be that instantaneous

I haven't watched the video yet (but I'm excited to see what you say), but I'll first state my opinion like this.

Do you need a race track to drive a sports car? No.
Do you need a CRT to play retro games? No.

Do you need a race track to drive a sports car like it was designed to be driven? Yes.
Do you need a CRT to play retro games they way they were designed to be played? Yes.

If I ever find myself without a CRT. I'm old, I'm in the old folks home, I just don't have a CRT. I will still play the old games with an FPGA system. At least I will be able to cut down the input lag a lot by being able to snac connect my controllers and natively output high def video signal. Still won't feel right though.

I don't feel there's any point to playing original hardware on a modern TV. If you're gunna not use a CRT, might as well buy a MiSTer and just use FPGA, the next best thing.

Yes because you don't know what your missing id you aren't playing it how it's meant to be played.

That said, there is also something awesome about playing on a 75 inch display as well.

In reality, the correct way to play is the way you want to.

But you also can buy a modern retro-console, like Analogue SG, RetroUSB AVS, etc. They all have HDMI out of the box with no lag input.

Composite, or most analog inputs look bad on a modern TV really ARE that bad. The limitations of CRT technology hides all that "Ugly" stuff you see on a modern TV.
Back when analog TV channels were still a thing (can still be used for retro consoles that support that), the shock people had when it looked so bad on the modern TV, especially the non-alignment of color information. Yeah, it was always there, just the limits, and tube size kept it out of view.

No, you don't need a CRT. You need a BUNCH of CRTs. I prefer 1 CRT per console. I love a good match. Early RF TV for that 2600, 1990 Trinitron for that PC Engine, 2000 wide screen for that Playstation.
