Phantom vs MiG 21

Operation Bolo was a cunning plan to deal with the MiG 21 attacks during Operation Rolling Thunder in Vietnam. The MiG 21s were successfully performing high speed attacks against the heavy US Thunderchiefs and a plan was hatched for agile F-4 Phantom IIs to pretend to be lumbering Republic F-105 Thunderchiefs to bait the Vietnamese air force into striking…

One of the skilled pilots behind the plan was WW2 ace Robin Olds who was convinced that his pilots could take on the MiG-21 and prevail if the MiGs could be drawn into the air on even terms.

Fun fact: Captain Olds was the only pilot to shoot down an aircraft while gliding during ww2, is was because he dropped his extra tanks before switching to his internal fuel tanks, so he was gliding behind a 109, so he shot it down

As much as I enjoy this channel, my grandpa was a mig 21 pilot and he told me he still have nightmare of his comrade being blown out of the sky by F4. The horror is real and he lives through that everyday.

I remember the old _Dogfights_ action/recreation documentary series that covered this same battle along with an actual interview with Olds. It's a shame we'll never get another such interview with such a man, but honestly it's really heartening to see channels like this updating and educating a new generation on battles such as this with new, engaging episodes like this. In December 1966 the MiG-21 pilots of the 921st FR downed 14 F-105 Thunderchiefs without any losses.
The USAF and the US Navy had high expectations of the F-4 Phantom, assuming that the massive firepower, the best available on-board radar, the highest speed and acceleration properties, coupled with new tactics, would provide Phantoms with an advantage over the MiGs. But in confrontations with the lighter MiG-21, F-4s began to suffer losses. From May to December 1966, the USAF lost 47 aircraft, destroying only 12 VPAF fighters in return. From April 1965 to November 1968, over 268 air battles occurred over the skies of North Vietnam. North Vietnam claimed 244 downed U.S. aircraft while admitting to the loss of 85 MiGs. Of these, 46 air battles conducted between F-4s and MiG-21s – the losses were 27 F-4 Phantoms and 20 MiG-21s.
