As a former competitive gymnast, I have to say this is the best instructional video for learning to backflip that includes safeguard exercises, well done!

I don't need to learn how to be a backflip and I probably would never be able to do it but I still watched this video Lol

How I prepare for a back flip

*Grabs every pillow and blanket I in the house

Nope not enough

*pulls couch to backflip area

Nope still not enough

*Puts beanbag chair on top of blankets, pillows, and couch

Almost there

*puts on a helmet and 5 oversized coats

Now I'm ready

*Tries backflip but misses the couch, pillows, and blankets and breaks neck

Quick question. My assumption is that you really need to practice to a point where it becomes your second nature before actually trying it on a hard surface? For a person without any parkour experience, I can only imagine breaking something if you fail. Worst would be the back of your head and least would be hurting your ankle? I mean even if you hurt your ankle that is already a few months to recover.

So as an ex pro d1 championship cheerleader and coach for the younger lower divisions, I was a tumbling coach and known for my tumbling skills at comps. I could (all past tense cause I'm 30, and years of this will ruin your bodies, it's very jarring) do a standing back tuck as high as I am tall and do a slow mo rotation. You get this by riding to the peak of your jump. One thing he is not doing although all of his tips are on point is when he jumps initially to throw his arms up to get height he doesn't punch through the air.
*set
*jump and punch (if you do it right without the flip you should feel like your gonna flail to your back or land on your butt)
*those arms fully extended above you are gonna swing back and around to scoop up your legs.
*simultaneously you are pulling your knees to your chest at the peak of your jump using your stomach muscles, not crouching into it (you won't get full rotation)
*it's very common to not see anything almost like a half second black out from the flip this will change when you gain air awareness.
*when landing you support your weight and absorb the shock by bending at the knees to slow your force down. It is IMPORTANT to absorb the shock, this can jar your body or even knock you on your ass in pain.
*if you are landing toes to knees you are bailing and not holding the tuck long enough (the more you practice the more air awareness you gain; it's similar to the matrix where everything slows down in a sense, real cool feeling)

My best tip I can give is to practice on a trampoline don't be afraid of your height you get ride it as high as you can before flipping.

Also, you have to commit to the flip and you will get all the way over. Do not start the tuck straight off the jump you will have to rely on your momentum to complete the rotation and will likely toe knee the landing.

Your feet should land together and about a foot away (two feet max) from where they left off. If you are more than two feet away from jump off you are "whipping over" this will cause back problems.

Practice punch jumps for about a week to train your lift off properly before you start trying to flip.
