Valve just released an app for your Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 2 and Pro VR Headset and it's kind of... Awesome? With Steam Link you are gonna be able to stream your PCVR games on your standalone headset, with an extra easy process, but how does it work? Is it better than what we have right now with Link and Virtual Desktop?
Let's discover it together in this video!
Let's get into it!

I tried it out all evening yesterday with a friend, we had a blast. Much easier to explain and set up than the Index. My index takes a while to start up, you get a weird gray screen, and 50% of the time there is an issue with one or both base stations not waking up (or going to sleep when I shut it off). Not to mention the cable of course. The quest2 just worked flawlessly. An amazing feat by Valve! Audio sucks of course, and tracking is not as good as on the Index, but for fooling around and showing off VR it's great. NOT TO MENTION, you can easily stream your quest gameplay to a phone, so that a friend can see what you are doing. A no-brainer really, should be a feature on any VR solution. Stream it to a Chromecast TV, or a native phone app, or whatever, just let med show off VR to friends without having to yank the headsett off their faces to make adjustments or explain stuff.

The app doesn't use foveated rendering, it used foveated encoding.

I had a really mixed experience with it. It worked right away, which was really impressive. Then it crashed, twice. Once it was really smooth in Alyx the next time it wasn't. The foviated effect is the strangest I've ever seen and I'd be okay with that if it kept things running smoothly, but it didn't.

I have been playing Alyx since the day it came out, spent hundreds of hours trying to make it run perfectly and still can't say why sometimes it runs great and others, it really really doesn't.

For a tip for people, this works flawlessly. But.... the down side you need a high end pc and if you dont its not going to be a good experience. I have top tier wifi and top tier pc. As for the quest 3 i own one and i had 0 problems with it cause of it. But if you dont own high end stuff you wont have a good time. My response time felt normal my graphics felt a little better on steam link vs the others but thats just my experience

I personally using link cable for sitting vr games and wireless for more moving games. Despite i love the freedom of wirless vr gaming. The quality and easy-to-use of cable link is way better than wireless gaming.

Hey tyriel, you say it's wireless but my vr headset is connected with a cable to the PC, will it work or does the connexion between the headset & PC need to be wireless ?

quest link is just annoying. having to try and get it to show my desktop, then click steam and just hope it automatically launches in steam vr. and having to take the quest off EVERY TIME to verify a stupid code on the screen is straight up annoying. steam link fixes both of these issues.

Unfortunately it keeps crashing Steam. Switched back to Virtual Desk

I tried Steam Link on my new Quest 3 with Assetto Corsa. First of all, EXTREMELY easy to use! Amazing integration with Steam (of course). Secondly, I was amazed that it worked at all, considering that I am at the other end of the house from my wi-fi 5 router (which is connected via ethernet to my PC). I figured the bandwidth would be too low to have AC even be drivable. But it worked better than I thought it would. I don't (yet) have a link cable to try for comparison. The one issue I had in AC was the contrast/brightness. The darks were VERY dark and the bright parts were way too bright and washed out. When I use my Reverb G2 directly connected to my PC via displayport I don't have this problem. I thought it might be an artifact of compression/low bandwidth, so I walked to the other end of the house to be right new to my router with my Quest 3 on and the contrast/brightness issue persisted. Is this something I can try to adjust in AC (or content manager) settings, Quest 3 settings, or Steam Link settings?

The audio from this app does not work on my headset... It just crackles...

It doesn't work, the Steam Link app closes out when I hit connect and steam vr on pc says waiting for headset.

Does not seems to be optimized yet on the render+encode cuz it is not saturating my mid tier GPU on the highest setting. Btw, latency number is visible on the Debug panel. Has the breakdown as well.

Honestly at first it didn't work for me smoothly, then I finally decided to get a 60$ wifi6 router dedicated for my PC and oculus and wow it was an immediate improvement. Almost no latency using just above the recommended pc specs. The introduction of Steam Link for oculus is what made me finally retire my old OG Rift and get the quest 2. So while meta might lose some sales on the software side, I'm sure letting steam release this app is going to generate a lot of hardware sales. I have a friend that is about to get the quest 3 and keep his rift S as a backup.

I’ll have to use the app on quest because I’m aware that steam link for iOS and android utilise the internet itself for remote play. Including steam vr modifications 😅

Tried it. Still think Link Cable is King.

I open the app and midway through connecting to steam it just closes the app on my quest 2 and I don’t know how to figure it out ???

do you need a valve base station for tracking to work with Meta Quest 3 in SteamVR games?
