As far as I’m aware Alnwick (pronounced annick) Castle was only used in the first Harry Potter film. It’s the flying lessons scene that was filmed there.

As an Englishman I’m very proud of our castles, but tbh if you want to see a real castle check out Krak des Chevaliers in Syria. Built by the Christian’s as a defence against the Muslims it is massive!

One left out is bamburgh castle on the north east coast of Northumberland which was used in the film Robin Hood Prince of thieves

Alnwick Castle, (pronounced ANNIK) also contains The Fusilier Museum of the County Regiment. I volunteer there one day per week. Northumberland has more castles than any other County, as well as Bastles, which are fortified farmhouses.

I live in Rochester... The castle was started in 1080's and stands 113ft tall and is one of the first Norman Castles to be built in this style... Rochester was a Roman settlement and been a walled city since the 3rd century!

Launceston Castle in Cornwall used (and may still) to have a music festival in the grounds every year called Castle Rock.

If you have the money and you’re in Edinburgh at the time of the Tattoo (and obviously book it in time), you can buy tickets for the Tattoo that include a meal in specific rooms of Edinburgh Castle before taking your seat to watch the pipes and drums of the Tattoo.

Many of the castles of the UK are still used as military barracks, so also played roles during WWII (though not to the same extent as Dover).

I would suggest that if you’re planning on visiting lots of castles and stately homes when you visit the UK, it’s worth looking into getting a membership of one of the heritage trusts, like English Heritage or Scottish Heritage or Cadw (the Welsh heritage trust, as in the first year it covers your entry into the the specific trust you joined but gives you a reduced rate for the others but from the start of your second year of membership, entry into all of the heritage trusts is included. So if you’re going to be visiting a lot of their properties, it massively reduces the costs involved.

What they didnt mention about Bodiam castle is the moat is full of monster sized carp. Its 10 minutes up the road from me.

Hi JT, Britain is basically a museum in itself, my local church dates back to 1080 . 😊

Hever Castle in Kent is also a lovely castle with a mote. And Hurst Castle is a castle that is actually in the sea and you get to by boat unless the tide is out. xx

What a lot of people forget about the Tower of London is that it is still listed as a prison - it has held the Kray Twins & Rudolf Hess for a time!

Out of all of the castles on this list, the only ones I've not been to, so far, are Highclere, Alnwick and Windsor.
All the others I have. I think I'm up to 15 or more so far.
Dover Castle is 45 miles away, Bodium Castle, the one with the moat, is 32miles, Leeds is only 14 miles miles away, and Rochester Castle, my favourite, is only 3 miles away.
Rochester castle is the tallest keep castle in England.
It was held at siege by King John in 1215 AD He undermined one of the towers to get in, and when the tower was rebuilt, it was rebuilt with a round tower, as they were harder to knock down. It was also used as the front cover of the album Legend by Irish folk group Clannad. Seems fitting as the Lefend album was the sound track to the TV series Robin Of Sherwood, who fought against King John in the stories.

About 6 yrs ago, my daughter's American friend from Iowa came to the UK for six months. He'd been here a week when there was a medieval fair at Rochester Castle, and actor Adrian Paul from the series Highlander, doing his sword show, so we went.
As we got out the taxi, I called Rusty's attention to see his first castle, sitting up on the hill. While he was standing still, slack jawed in awe, I casually pointed out that that castle had already been standing right there, for more than 200 yrs BEFORE his country was ever officially discovered!
Lets just say, that after a day at the castle, andbthe historic Dickensian town that Rochester is, he was blown away by even the cobble stone paths! Lol

I live in Dover and the castle is spectacular when lit up at night. It dominates the skyline above the town and when you drive down the M20 (A20) there is a fantastic view of it as you drop down into the town from the chalk North Downs.

When I was little a grew up going to Warwick Castle and Windsor Castle. They are so fun and the history is insane. You defiantly need to go and visit.

I have a great view of Windsor castle from my bedroom window, living just over the river 😊 Used to go there on school trips as a child, i used to love the massive dolls house. Even remember seeing the smoke and flames from my school playground when it caught fire...
