A MESSAGE FROM MASTERBUILT.
Thanks for contacting us. We’re received quite a few inquiries on this topic and wanted to provide as much information as possible on the metal plates and firebricks.

Metal Plates
The metal plates in the lower portion of the hopper hold the firebrick in place and protect it during shipping. These burn out and drop into the ash pan. They are not necessary for the grill to function and we’re not offering a replacement part, since they are meant to be temporary.

Firebrick
In the Gravity Series Hopper, your fire is contained to a 6” – 12” area that is reinforced with a food-safe soft ceramic firebrick to handle the higher temps in the lower portion of the hopper. The ingredients in the food-safe ceramic are FDA allowed for use in food or as an indirect additive used in food contact.

The firebrick takes the heat from the charcoal fire and is to be replaced only once a hole burns in it that is more than 0.5” deep and 5” in diameter. These firebricks will be a warrantied part and will also available for purchase post-warranty at a retail of $29.99 for the full set (4 firebricks with temporary metal plates). In our testing, we’ve seen firebricks last multiple years. You do get some initial firebrick degradation during burn-in and initial usage, but then degradation tends to stabilize.

Bought this grill a few months back. Used several times with no issues...yet. I'm all about preventive maintenance which is why I'm watching this video at 5am. Just ordered the elite mod kit and hopper lid for my 560...cant wait to receive it. Much appreciation for the video!

I just installed the water pan mod and the manifold mod with the drip pan holders. It went in perfect. I also have the firebox ready to install, but already have my hopper filled for a cook this weekend, so I'll hit that next week. Expensive, but well made and worth the effort and money.

I’m only 3 smokes in on my new 1050. This looks worth the time and money, so I’ll be doing this to mine in October.

Great video Tommy! But the biggest thing that strikes me is the fact that it’s September 24 and your pool cover is on and you’re wearing a sweatshirt! I’ll take my more temperate climate if you please! We have some fall and winter, but wow, I’ll swim this weekend at least! Let’s keep the warm weather at least until November. Have a great day and stay warm, my friend.

I bought a mod before realizing how much work it was to install it. I honestly don't think I can be bothered. I am considering selling my 800 and getting the XT.

Hey Tommy, thanks for posting this. I got a local fabricator here in the UK to make me a liner as the shipping costs would be too much from the US. This seems to be a really controversial topic on the FB group but I am inclined to agree with you that despite what MB reckons, I am not keen on that crusty flaky metal coming way to reveal the 'firebrick ' behind it. It just doesn't make sense to then have the firebrick exposed to getting charcoal and wood chunks knocking on to it. I know its supposed to be food safe and all but I just don't like the idea of it.

I mean, why not have a nice strong stainless steel liner in front of it that will no doubt last for hundreds of cooks if not more.

There have been reports that Masterbuilt are now shipping the grills from the factory with an improved firebox made out of stainless steel. Can anyone else confirm if this is true?

I would have thought a more robust firebox from the start?

My 800 fell apart after a month of use, did you ever do an update with this firebox mod to see how the firebox mod is holding up? I think I may go return this masterbuilt while its in the return window.
