it's like rich people saying money doesn't matter or a model/actor saying looks don't matter.
even though I agree skills are the most important factor and that can be developed only by practice, hard work, and self study. a good college gives a lot of benefit. we can get highly skilled faculty, good management, opportunities, environment, and guidance. all these things are also important to train efficiently in college years. guidance and opportunities is the most important one which can only be found in big colleges.

A degree opens a lot of doors.. without it, yeah you can still make it big but the amount of opportunities you will get are going to be very minuscule.
