This lens isn't the latest or "greatest" but for video shooters, it's definitely one to check out. Especially if your camera doesnt support focus breathing compensation.

Like the compactness of your review. Had the both sigma 1.4 versions of 35mm but sold them both. Now back to this little baby. It’s so fast and the minimum focus distance is very helpful

I've been using the Zeiss 35 1.4 since 2017. Love it, but thinking of downsizing for overseas shooting. The size difference is amazing.. I might test it out before purchasing.

I sold this to get the 1.4 Gm. I should've kept it. The gm is better for photos but the focus breathing is terrible for video. The 35mm 1.8 is way better for video and gimbal work. It's also a nice street lens because of it's size.

The lens is good, that is for sure. It is sharp, has good build quality and it is good for focusing in video mode. However, there is 2 things why it just doesn't attract me at all:
1) There is no rubber gasket on it for more than 700€. That is just ridiculous. Even the cheap Tamron primes at f/2.8 for about 200-250€ have one. If you pay this amount of money, it should really be standard.
2) I don't like the form factor. It is very straight, somehow it just doesn't feel like I have a proper grip around it. I prefer a more curvy form factor as you get, for example, with the Tamron 35/2.8 or the Samyang 50/1.4 II. Just feels better in the hand.

hi there. i dont do video. Aside of build quality, what else that GM has better than this lens? I have budget for GM but Im wondering if I should take this lens instead. Im casual photographer that mostly shoot while traveling or family events.

One thing that isn't mentioned a lot is that it also has a super pleasing image with some background pop that's very reminiscent of the Zeiss look. For video, this guy is actually better than the Gmaster IMO.

BTW, this is almost exactly the same size as the 1.8/55 except that the 55 uses a 49mm filter whereas the 35 uses a 55mm.

Thank you. I would really appreciate it if Sony updated this lens to a G build like the FE 20/1.8 G. I have this lens and the bigger heavier GM f/1.4 and really need both. I don’t want a slower f/2.5 like the other small G. Still want an f/1.8. That’s my feedback. By the way I’m not a videographer. Take care.

Only downside I found for photography is the CA is terrible on this lens. I now have the GM so it's time to sell the 1.8.
