What is Chickenpox?
This Video looks at what is Chickenpox. Chickenpox (also known as Varicella) is a very contagious disease that is caused by varicella zoster virus. It commonly affects children under the age of 10 years old, but It can affect anyone. The symptoms of Chickenpox are initially fever, loss of appetite and general malaise, however one to two days after the symptoms start, patients will start to get a rash, this rash is very itchy and can become a pustule (which is a pus filled blister).
Chickenpox is an airborne virus meaning it can be transmitted through, coughing and sneezing. So in order to prevent its spread it is good practice to "catch it, bin it, kill it". Once a person has been exposed to the virus they normally get symptoms eight to twenty-one days later.
The Chickenpox rash tends to develop on the head and face first then moves to the chest, back and then limbs. It is possible to develop a rash on the inside of your mouth and your throat. The blisters often crust over after about 1 week, Chickenpox in children is normally considered a mild Illness. Despite this, children with Chickenpox still can feel really miserable and very irritated.
There is no specific treatment for Chickenpox but there are medications which can help to alleviate the symptoms, such as paracetamol to help relieve the fever and calamine lotion to stop itching, it’s also important that the child stay hydrated this can be done with sugar free ice lollies which can help hydration and sooth sore throats. But Chickenpox in children normally gets better on its own in about a week.
If the child’s blisters become infected, then they should always be taken to a doctor the same if they have pain of difficulty breathing as the most dangerous and common complication of Chickenpox is pneumonitis which is an inflammation of lung tissue, Chickenpox is worse in adults, pregnant women, new born babies and people with a compromised or weakened immune system (which can occur as a result of HIV for example) It is important to know that if a child is suspected to have chicken pox then, Aspirin should never be given as this can lead to a devastating condition known as Reye’s syndrome.
Once a person has had chicken pox it is unlikely they will get it again, as the body now remembers how to fight it off. However, the virus remains in the body and lies dormant in the nerve cells. The immune system is able to keep the virus at bay, however if the immune system becomes weakened then the virus can reactivate again leading to shingles. Producing severely painful blisters in a particular part of the body. It is possible to transmit chickenpox from shingles but you cannot transfer shingles.
