Love Basil's reaction when Manuel and the guest are conversing in fluent Spanish!

"He's from Barcelona.. in Spain."

Basil's sarcasm is hilarious and Cleese's delivery is perfection.

Comedic perfection from the country that best understands comedy.

This Brown guy is undoubtedly one of the best characters in this series xD.

This episode is so well balanced ... Basil constantly derides Mr. Brown, who it turns out is trying to help him, while fawning over "Lord" Melbury who wants to rip him off.

I have to be honest, I have the box set of all episodes and loved it so much that I can’t help commenting on it in a good way.

Andrew Sachs, who plays Manuel, did not actually speak Spanish despite the character he was playing. Later on he took part in a BBC TV programme about language learning, in which he learned something of the language.

Throughout my TV watching history, shows such as The Simpsons, Thunderbirds, etc, have had great one-off characters.
I can confirm that Fawlty Towers is another fantastic example, justified by the characterisation of Danny Brown - a co-operative, intelligent and cool working-class undercover cop who unintentionally makes Basil jealous (especially with his fluency in Spanish) and looks to me like he's had the hots for Polly since his first interaction with her.

Whilst I love all of the characters in FT over the episodes from the deaf Mrs Richards (Joan Sanderson) to the Wardolf salad episode with Harry Hamilton (Bruce Boa), you get to realise what a great actor and comedian John Cleese is. Love Prunella Scales too. I can see so much in common with my relationship with my wife!

Saw an interview with David Kelly who played Mr O’Reilly - seems he was allowed to have a lot on input into his character, which is I feel very respectful for how parts work better.

Basil is a prude and a snob and he lives in mortal fear of his wife. What a character!

I never noticed that was Mr.Brown. It's so funny how acting different can make you appear to be a different person too😂

Basil later says he learnt "Classical Spanish", not the "strange dialect" that he claims Manuel picked up. Obviously, "Classical Spanish" just doesn't cut the mustard for everyday conversation.

John and Polly created a tremendously funny character in the tortured and miserable, "Basil Faulty". The entire cast was good, but John sure led the show.

I didn’t catch a word Basil said, but the conversation between Brown and Manuel went something like this:

Brown: Manuel, if you can, look for my luggage, which is in a white car, and bring it to room seven.
Manuel: Oh sir, you speak Spanish!
Brown: Only a little, I’m sorry but I’ve forgotten a lot.
Manuel: No sir, you speak very well! Very very well, formidable!
Brown: Thank you, thank you
Manuel: I’ll go get it now.
