Anyone know if you need the neve di box when recording from a guitar input? I know the mic input is balanced but is the instrument input balanced too???

I bought one and absolutely love it on mics and synths. It's my go to now. I barely touch my other preamps. Does anybody know why there's such a different sound using a compressor/1176 through the insert send/return opposed to going from the neves output directly into the compressor? Which way is it interred to be used?
