Great video love my UAD 1073 it’s hands down the best plugin will usually track drums with analog compression on the way in then use the UAD 1073 and some 1176 ITB then send the drum bus OTB to my Drawmer comp and EQ then hit my Burl B2 ADC to add that depth and hardware bigness it works on a lot of things Analog EQ can works as a stereo field expander both tools are amazing!

I own the Neve 1073 spx... where you start seeing bigger differences is when you start layering multiple tracks using the hardware. Yes you’re not going to hate a mix with software... but when you layer a song with track after track with a legit hardware preamp... that’s when it stands out pretty noticeably.

Definitely agree with you on your review . The legacy plugin pleased me the most which I am shocked because I'm a Hardware lover for Mic Pres

I will say the difference wouldn't matter from the consumer/ listener perspective, however, as an audio and mastering engineer the hardware sounds less smudged, a little more clear and rounded. BUT it's only 10% better

Great video . This is the perfect video I’ve been looking for ! I own The uad Neve preamp and been wanting to pull the trigger to get the hardware . I agree the uad neve and hardware are pretty close, the hardware has that nice low end weight to it . Thanks for the video, I’m definitely getting the hardware !

Thank you for your test, I appreciated.

Thank you! You just saved me 3000 bucks. The hardware sounded maybe 1 to 5% fuller and better than the plug ins so spending all that extra money on the unit is not worth it IMO

plugin is close but not enough of physical weight to the signal

Great review! I agree, there is a slight difference in mid-range warmth, but to me, the difference isn't significant, especially for an average listener who isn't listening for specific frequencies.

Sorry if you mentioned this in the video, but what mic did you use for the vocals?

It was a big difference to me. The hardware was superior. The SPX was deeper and words were clearer. One can tell on the 's' sounds like the word "satisfied" in the lyrics. Thank you for making posting this test.

In my humble opinion, as always in all Hardware vs. Plugin comparisons, one would expect to perceive the differences in just one, two, or three passes of an audio, which is very, very challenging. Only someone with well-trained ears and many years of experience can pick up those subtle nuances that make hardware shine over a plugin. For the rest of us, including myself, we need to examine it closely by focusing on two or three seconds of each audio. Just like our eyes, our ears don't retain detailed memories for extended periods. If you're not a photography expert, you'd probably zoom in and compare photos when trying to determine if the iPhone 15 takes better pictures than the iPhone 12, right? That's when the differences become apparent.

Apply the same approach to audio. Zoom in on a small section of one or two seconds, and you'll notice that hardware feels three-dimensional while the plugin seems flat. This is what makes hardware superior. If you try this with four tracks simultaneously, with four different instruments, the difference will become even more obvious. You can even test this by recording the audio from this YouTube video, and you'll see the distinction despite the quality loss due to video compression. My apologies for this lengthy message.

question, I just saw a video stating if one uses a hardware pre as an insert to run a track through, I can’t hear the tweaks I make as they track plays? Meaning, I have to guess what settings I want, process it and THEN I can hear what the hardware changes sounded like after I tweak the hardware setting?

Is this accurate? With the hardware you can’t here the adjustments in real time? That’s something I never knew, I looking into buying some gear so this is important for me, thanks for your help!

Hardware is definitaly better. Software dont add anything ... its just a "flat" picture. The hardware adds real information, is more organic, clean, more color ... just better. Also you loose information if you process the vocal further in the DAW on software 1073.
There is a big difference, if you have added high quality structure through hardware instead a flat picture through a software. Its the same with having an organic apple in your hand (hardware) or you just draw a picture on paper from the apple (software).

Music is energy, so the hardware is real structure.

I had gotten the 1073spx hardware on trial, I did a test with the 1073 uad, it sounded the same to my ears, I sent the hardware back

Yall sick the hardware sounds more dense and 3d.

Listening on kh120 my thoughts are the plugins sounds compressed / losing dynamics. The low-end sounds more natural compared to the plugin sounds actually a bit squashed, honestly I also experienced that thing when A/B the UAD plugin vs Standart Apollo Pre for me the standard sounds way better, natural, less digital.
