Should You Use 24FPS (24P)? What Frame Rate to Choose?

24P is a pretty old format that's mainly used because of past limitations in analog film. Times and technology have changed a lot since then. So should you still use 24P in 2020?

In this video we will find out.

Thanks again, Pascal!
A couple of additional things to consider: 1) a minor one, 24fps (1/50th shutter speed) allows a bit longer exposure than 30fps (1/60th) in low light. 2) in Europe 25fps is definitely better than 24fps when there are normal lights in the frame due to flicker effect. Also the higher frame rates should be in sync with 50Hz AC.

Great video, and well explained Pascal. Lately I usually use 60fps for my yt & AMZ videos. Got a m6 mk2 now and have 24p with new fw upgrade. Will do next vid or one after in 24p and try a bit of semi slow-mo. BTW, I am Irish, living in the Philippines, and I am also Pascal. Got a French friend called Patrick (we call Paddy) living down the road .... P

Why 24, a legacy frame rate designed to save film costs? Virtually no screens display in 24fps, even in 2020. Almost all computers and phones use 30 or 60. Why not just shoot at 30 or 60? People will be watching it at that speed. Your 24 will be squished into 30 or 60.

All the justifications people use it's hilarious. This is legacy nostalgia, nobody will be using 24 in a few years.

Unless you're putting your content on broadcast video (almost zero people) NTSC and PAL are totally irrelevant. Computer / phone screens are 30/60 or a multiple. Done.

If you want slow motion shoot at 60 or 120. These are children's games messing with a format created 100 years ago.

Awesome video. Quick question my camera supports 24p as well as the 23.976. What is the difference and are you choosing real 24p or the exact frames of 23.976? Are there syncing issues with other cameras in post? Or with external audio? I appreciate your help!

Well, it's definitely not "many" displays that have an adaptable refresh rate, other than 60 Hz. More than 90 % of smartphones and computer monitors are fixed 60 Hz, so for publishing on Youtube, I'd really stick to 30p, especially if there's movement involved like in drone shots. It's really awful in drone shots. But you can also see this judder in other types of footage when there's movement involved. And for all other types of footage with little motion, I'd be hard pressed to reliably tell 24 p apart from 30 p and I guess everyone else would be, too. 24 p and 60 p definitely yes, but 24 p and 30 p, I doubt it.
The special cinematic look everybody talks about when it comes to 24 p is a result of other things but the framerate. Things like lighting, story, the right shutter speed and so on. And the awkward judder you get with 24 p on Youtube (watched on mostly 60 Hz smartphone and computer screens!) is definitely not cinematic because in cinema, you don't have that choppiness (as they display the movies at 48 Hz or another frequency which is a multiple of 24).
But as this 24 p myth still exists and almost all Youtube filmmakers spread it into the Youtube universe, I guess I'll have to watch choppy 24 p footage down the road. At least, kudos to everything else in your channel. Your content, your stories, your visuals are great and I enjoy them very much.

I had to change my refresh rate to 24Hz just so your video would look smoother on my 60Hz monitor.
I wish I had a 120Hz monitor so everything would look smooth. If only a 600Hz monitor existed... then film to NTSC and PAL frame rate would all look smooth.

I really enjoy your content ❤️ I mainly shoot 24 FPS or 60 so I can slow it down to 24 FPS. However Since I live en Europe I’m considering going for 25fps to combat flickering light if that would help.

Very nice lighting, always use 60 recorded in 1/120 down to 23.976 image per second (i m in Asia)

I always shoot at 60P, and then render the video at 24P.

irgendwie ist das video ja mehr für die NTSC-region. immer wieder herrlich, wenn PAL user bei ihren videos ihr PAL-hirn ins NTSC übersetzen müssen. 25/50/100/... und 24 für cine.
