**MIGRAINE INFO**

(You can find it on iTunes, too.)

Scientific paper I mentioned with the 2 sisters who did keto for weight loss and had spontaneous/unexpected remission of migraines: Diet transiently improves migraine in two twin sisters: possible role of ketogenesis?
(On the ketogenic diet, they did NOT avoid common migraine triggers such as MSG, caffeine, aspartame, nitrates/nitrites, etc.)

Meet me in person!

Come to North Carolina in January for Dr. Westman's Keto Retreat!

The main reason I started keto last May was to rid of these debilitating chronic migraines! It’s certainly helped :) Thank you for covering this topic ❤️

Dr Angela Stanton's Protocol works. It's strict but it works like a charm.

Wonderful information. I have been doing the Kato diet for 15 years and love it. I suffered with migraine for 23 years and the Kato diet helped a lot. But the reason I suffered from migraine was because I was a DES daughter. My my migraines started when I was pregnant at 26 and didn't end completely until I went through menopause. I am 57 now and haven't had a migraine in 8 years so it was a hormonal problem due to the DES exposure. During those 23 years I had more migraines than not.

What you described as the worst headache you ever had is one of many types of totally debilitating migraines.

I haven't had much success getting people to try keto strictly for migraines...Lordy I've tried. I'm linking this video on my website so maybe I'll have more success from now on.

I don’t get migraines, but used to get regular headaches. One of the first things I noticed after starting keto was that those headaches disappeared.

This info is so helpful. I have been on Keto over a year and recently had the worst migraine (aura) ever. Trigger seems to be artificial sweeteners and poor electrolyte balance. Labs said my magnesium was 2.7 so the Dr (in hospital) wouldn't give me any and I went home after 3 days with the same headache I went in with. They also tried to put me on a high carb diet which I ate very little of - had a friend bring me avocados. When home I upped my electrolytes and ate carnivore; after 3 days the headache improved greatly. I was just guessing but now I know...THANK YOU!

My sister suffers from chronic migraines and her daughter has epilepsy with seizures pretty regularly. I've been trying very hard to convince them to try Keto along with me. No success! Sad but true. Thanks for the info!

I've had chronic migraines for years. Barometric changes are my major trigger. I recently went on a blood thinner (due to a TIA) which has totally eliminated my migraines!

Count your blessings if you haven’t had one. Here’s what it’s like: Imagine someone clamping your head in a big steel shop vise. Two men with big heavy hammers start hitting the vise to match your heartbeat. Clang-clang, clang-clang, clang-clang! Someone periodically tightens the vise, by the tiniest amount. Someone else honks an air horn in your ear, while yet another a-hole keeps shining a super bright flashlight directly into your eyes. All of you are on a playground merry-go-round which someone keeps spinning, stopping, and spinning again, and again, and again. If you’re lucky, there’s a very entertaining blurry spot right near the center of your vision that slowly, over the course of 45-90 minutes, expands into a weird vibrating kaleidoscope that interferes with half your field of vision, then eventually fades away into your peripheral vision. Haha, good thing you weren’t on the freeway with another 200 miles to drive in the dark when this started happening, right? Migraines are loads of fun. If you take an unwise quantity of ibuprofen or Excedrin right away, don’t worry, you’ll feel slightly better after about 3 hours of wondering whether it would be more fun to just knock yourself unconscious for the rest of the day. You’ll also be strangely exhausted when you “recover” for anywhere from 12 hours to 3 days, as if you just caught the flu. No biggie. Oddly, if you do manage to throw up right away instead of using special breathing techniques to avoid it, you’ll feel better more quickly than if you didn’t. I’ve never figured that one out.

I’ve had migraines since before I can remember. Since keto, I only get one after fasted exercise that lasts long enough to make a major impact on my blood glucose. Like a six mile hike. A video on the High Intensity Health channel interviewed someone who studies migraineurs. One of their suggested solutions that works for some people is MCT oil (or raising ketones basically), to make the brain cells relax and maybe not throw a fit about potentially not having enough glucose floating around. Because a glucose crisis or some kind of oxidative stress crisis seems to be one of the main mechanistic triggers, and having higher ketones can mitigate either of those. I’m still experimenting with that. But for sure I never get migraines anymore in a typical month on keto and intermittent fasting. What’s weird is that when I do go on a long hike or something while in a fasted state I can feel the migraine coming for like 8 hours afterward (increasing neck stiffness and a little head throbbing is a precursor), so there is time to try various possible preventative measures like raising ketones and relaxation techniques that sometimes work.

I wouldn’t wish a migraine on my worst enemy. Unless they tell me that a migraine is “just a headache”.

Edit: The High Intensity Health interview was with Elena Gross, PhD. Anyone who gets migraines should also check that out.

I have been in ketosis for two years now for my migraines. At first it didn't make me anything special. But for about a year it has rather made my migraines worse. I've just realized this thanks to my migraine calendar. I think Keto helps a lot for people who have migraines related to poor diet or overweight, but not for women who have migraines related to hormonal imbalance. I think that The keto diet increased this imbalance in me. So I am now going to move to a Paleo Low carb diet. What do you think ? It would interest me to know your point of view.

Thank you!!! This message is so important. I suffered from debilitating migraines for my whole adult life until 5-6 years ago when I started lchf way of eating. I have been free from them since. I sometimes get an ocular migrain after eating carbage. I am presently reading Angela Stanton’s book, it is an excellent resource!! My 30 year old daughter suffers from debilitating migraines - I want to communicate to her about the urgent need to increase her insulin sensitivity by dietary changes. I might flick her the link to this video. Thank you so much!! 🙏🏻

Thank you, I have eaten low carb for five years and my migraines have reduced considerably but yesterday I had a bad one. My ketone by blood was 1.0 my blood sugar was 91 and BP was 148/84. I had not eaten since 9;30 pm and the migraine occurred at 10;40 am. It has been months since the last time I had one. I am trying to investigate what triggered it.

Amy, does running the brain behavior on ketones help in the recovery from concussion or stroke? Has there been any research GF into this?

I suffer from migraines and unfortunately every time I try to lower carbs below 70-60 g I give myself a splitting headache even though I am very coscious about electrolytes and fat amount. You're right Amy, migraines are something else. It's a systemic attack on each part of your body so massive you want to die. I live pretty low carb but I keep on loosing weight. I look like a skeleton, I could easily wear clothes of a regular 11 year old. I am a dietetician spreading low carb gospel but somehow cannot practice what I preach.
Note: I haven't had a migraine since I stopped drinking coffee 2 months ago. Miracle. The thing is I still loose weight and soon I'm about to find out if that's coeliac or something else.
