I liked the toilet paper idea for filling in big gaps. I use either a spray bottle of water to keep my finger and the calk slightly wet before smoothing it out. For applying latex calk over tile: i go over the calked (and wiped off with a finger) area with a wet cloth to take of any extra calk that gets into areas beyond the calking bead area. Then I use a wet finger to go across the bead to make sure that the wet towel doesn't leave any traction lines from the weave pattern of the washcloth. I just calked my trim and then saw this, . I didn't dare tell anyone I used left over napkins from fast food drive thru to fill the space in my trim, then I saw your video. I was sure there was some expensive special filler that I was supposed to stick in there. Learning as I go so really appreciate your tips. Thank you!

The last caulking i did had to be double teamed by myself and a friend! We were caulking for hours, it was a big job, but we kept nailing it till we got it pounded out, The wife wanted to call in a couple pros but after some convincing and seeing that we had adequate caulk for the job, she decided to let us have a go at it! My friend Started at one end with his caulk and me on the other end with my caulk! The wife was skeptical that we could get the job done to her standards but at the end of the day she cleaned up the mess, and was extremely happy how it turned out!

I have been a journeyman for over 20 years, working in residential and commercial glass, Windows and curtain walls etc. I thought in that time I had seen it all, but I was wrong!! The toilet paper 🧻 trick made laugh 😂. That’s awesome lol! Good job, cheers!

The gem of this caulking video over the others is the TP trick. I'm going to use this technique for a widely splayed baseboard!

For those bigger gaps, instead of toilet paper I use cut up piping insulation foam. It can be wedged in the gap and it expands a little so it creates a nice firm backing.

I recently used expandable foam insulaltion to fill a huge gap behind a counter. Masking tape before filling the gap with foam. Allow to dry, then trim off with sharp knife before caulking. It came out pretty good.

When I go about placing my caulk in some gaps I prefer to wet the tip a bit with water, or some kind of water based lubricant, so that the caulk easily slides into the gaps. I have tried it without anything and its just too rough and its kind of hard to get the caulk to set in there where you want it to be. Thank you on the tips on handling caulk, its really opened my eyes to the many different strategies for a good caulking!
