It works. But on modern high end devices that use batterys, if the circuit hit a point where the batteries don’t give enough voltage, it will shut off. This is only on things like smart projectors and things with chips, so a flashlight would just be dim. On a gameboy or anything like that you won’t have to worry to much.

While this will probably work, the battery life will be way shorter and you would have to make sure not to touch the foil.

Yes they have the same voltage output, the main difference is double A's just have better battery life. However you really shouldn't do this because the reason it works is the current is running through the aluminum foil, and it's quite the fire hazard because that aluminum foil is going to start to get really hot

I'm American but I'll say the word I first thought of.. Brilliant! Especially if there was an emergency and you only had AAA batteries to use! All you need to do is fold a few small pieces of aluminum as a small square to fill in the length of a AA battery! 😎

For those wondering: it works because AAA, AA, C and D batteries all output 1.5V, the only difference is that bigger batteries have more capacity.
