RIP to all the OG Teams and Lv100s.
Sad Nintendo didn't make a method to transfer ya boys over.

Oh my god this makes so much more sense. I was trying to remove the old solder with a wick before removing the old battery... no wonder I was having so much trouble LOL, thanks for the tip!

In case you wonder why on earth do these games need a battery to keep your save:
Back in the days, rewritable flash storage was very expensive and rather slow. So they used RAM for this. Since RAM constantly needs to refresh the data, they installed a battery which would keep the data alive.
For Pokémon there actually is a second reason. The game has 4 banks of SRAM, with 8KiB each. Since the SRAM can be normally addressed, the game (ab)uses parts of bank 0 as extra RAM to decompress Pokémon sprites. Bank 1 saves most of the actual data and 2&3 hold the boxes.

I need to dump my save files off my old carts soon. Before the batteries finally die.

hey, So if I replace the battery will I still have my old save?

I thought you needed to use solder wick to remove the old solder, then clean it with rubbing alcohol, add new solder and then add the battery, another rubbing alcohol cleanup and then play

I did this, and it successfully saved the 2nd time saved, but after that it can't save any new files, it keeps going back to the first save in players home. Do you know what that could be?

My Crystal with many Pokémons died yesterday. The battery I installed 2 month ago died because the seller gave me a old one. Also always check the Volt’s on your fresh replaced battery

I got the same one. I turn it on and it doesn’t give me an option to continue game and when I do click a new game it doesn’t start? Is that still a battery issue?

I have opened my pokemon red cartridge and if doesn't have a battery in to begin with.
The pcb is also half the size of the cartridge.
There is a space for a battery but no retaining pin to hold it.

Anyone able to advise?

Or just download an emulator on your phone and play it that way

This is incorrect. When you do a proper test, you MUST remove the cartridge and insert it back again. If you don't, then the AA batteries in the Gameboy itself can supply enough residual power to the cartridge to keep a game save for a short period even with a non-functioning save battery.

Who knew game preservation would be that hard. I think I'll stick to emulation
