Excellent! Oddly enough I need to change the battery in donkey kong as well.

I had to do that when I got both Zelda Oracle games for the Game Boy Color about 10 years ago. All I did was replace just the battery part (leaving the tabs) and duck tape it down. Worked fine since.

you can do this without solder, and with a xacto knife or similar small blade to get inbetween the tab and the battery, and some tape.

as long as the replacement battery is touching the contacts you're golden. a little electrical tape and you're set.

I made it really far in Donkey Kong for the Gameboy. Never did beat it, but some months back, I did get myself another copy.

This is hilarious. I clicked on this video as something to watch...while soldering new batteries into GameBoy and NES carts.

Always be careful pulling on components soldered to a PCB as you can inadvertently tear the trace (the copper "highway" that the electricity travel on). And also when replacing any "tabbed" button cell battery, normally one tab will be wider than the other .. the wider side is always positive. (just like components such as LED's, capacitors, and other "polarized" components, will have the positive leg represented by being longer than its negative counterpart). Any time I do any "electronic surgery" I make sure to also clean off any flux residue with isopropyl alcohol while I got her open as it will otherwise create corrosion over time and eat the board. Love you videos! keep on keeping the best genre of games alive, one cart at a time

Probably one of the most important fixes any classic gamer should know. Especially if you want to play Pokemon G/S/C.

It was good video John.
Not sure if you know about those little carts. When they don't want to work. You have to reflow the chips. Sometimes all of them to get it working again.

I usually use a solder wick to remove the old solder - super easy to use, cheap (under a few bucks) and quick! A dab of new solder over the hole in the tabbed battery and you are good to go!

Wow, didn't realize that the GB chip takes up almost the whole inside-- even contouring around the notch at the top. Funny contrast to the NES.

It's about time you do something with a Game Boy game.

Not Open Cart Surgery? Yeah it was. Good job it’s a simple fix but not many people know how to change out batteries on carts. It’s better to make a video so people know than to assume they do.
