This is the method I used for solving this problem.
Let x = the number of games that Jeff won.
Then x + 99 = the number of games that Dave won.
The equation is: x + (x+99) =529
Solve the equation.
2x + 99 =529
2x - 99 = -99
2x =430
2x/2 = 430/2
X = 215
Jeff won 215 games, and Dave won 314 games.
To check the answer, add 215 + 314. The total number of games won by Jeff and Dave ia 529.

I did this in my head. 529 - 99 = 430 430 divided by 2 = 215 So Jeff had 215, while Dave got 215 + 99 = 314

No calculator needed, only a tiny piece of paper:
Average wins = 529 / 2 = 264½ and difference in wins to average = +/- 99/2 = +/- 49½

Dave wins 264½ PLUS 49½ = 264 + 50 = 314 and
Jeff wins 264½ MINUS 49½ = 265 - 50 = 215

Checking: 215 + 99 = 314 correct.

I love your YouTube channel. I’ve looked at your website it offers great information. I didn’t see any virtual tutoring options

I did amazing after watching a ton of of your videos about word equations I'm feeling more confident.😊

Jeff: 215 & Dave: 314.
Just subtract 99 from total and divide result by 2. That is Jeff.
Add 99 for Dave.

That is quite the pitching duel. One averages 31 wins a year and the other 21. Blue Jays could use such a pair.

After a couple of months of practice I am finally on my way to be good at algebra. And I put emphasis on the words "on my way". ;)
The first step is to get rid of my common sense approach and trust the process.

I am glad you did not start with an even number separated by 99 because that would have thrown in ½ on both Dave and Jeff. Does winning half a game mean there were tied games?

This was so so easy. Mental arithmetic, Done in seconds. Pragmatism reigns.

Easy one! I did it exactly the way you did. I’m in my 70s so that algebra type problem was taught the same as you did way back in high school years. So much fun!

Without using anything but my head 99 - 529 split the number in half and add 99 seconds to figure!314 215

That seemed pretty simple to me watching the thumbnail and I'm not very good at math. PLEASE Correct me if my method is wrong here.
I took the total amount of games, devided by 2, took the difference and devided by 2, put those two together, minussed the diffference in game wins and tada. 314 for Dave and 215 for Jeff.

Learning this again isn’t the same when you’re 25. You feel so behind.

How is this algebra? It is simple maths, subtraction, division, then addition.

Did I hear a Mr. Mackey "m'kay" in there?

English is sometimes funny. It stated they won “together” then say again one won more? Which is which?

jeff 215 dave 314. Formulas J+D=529 and D=J+99. Substitution method. At least that was my method. Took about 40 seconds in my head. But isn't this pre-algebra level?

Isn't this just a case of (529 - 99)/2 = 430/2 = 215
Jeff won 215 games and Dave won (215 + 99) = 314
and to check the answer 215 + 314 = 529

Why? The equation didn’t say they pitched the same number of games. Why not 99 and 430, 100 and 429, 101 and 428, etc. not a well worded equation.
