The human body is so incredible and has amazing talents that are often never even discovered, such as superhuman strength. It's true that in some cases of extreme stress the body can shut down other systems and focus all energy on one, giving it heightened powers far beyond what we ever thought we were capable of. Watch today's amazing new video to see what we mean.

When it comes to life or death, I think most of us would be amazed at what we're capable of doing.

Fun fact: your muscles are actually strong enough to rip themselves off of your bones.

When I was 3 I pulled the christmas tree down on top of me. My mom lifted it off...it probably only weighed about 30lbs, but I thought she was the strongest woman on earth at the time.

I was about 11 years old, and my dog and I were running through a field. They had created a hole in the middle of the field that had to of been 10 - 13 ft deep and had dead animals surrounded by water in the hole. My dog fell in and I had managed to grab the side. Mind you, this is in the middle of no where surrounded by a field. I was terrified no one would find me. Somehow I got extreme strength, pulled myself out (I was not athletic by ANY means) and sprinted a mile to the property my parents were going over with the builder, hysterically crying because my puppy who was only 5 months old at the time was drowning. I totally believe in hysterical strength. I could barely do a pull up and I managed to do that and more. Don’t worry. My puppy is alive and well is is a whopping 12 years old. He’s happy and healthy and we’ve always had an insane bond. 😊

Fun fact: When people get thrown back by a shock, it's not the shock that knocks them back, but rather a sudden, violent contraction of large muscles. This has raised questions as to the true strength of the human body.

It’s technically called “Hysterical Strength”. And I recently read somewhere that is was the inspiration for the character The Incredible Hulk. Back in the 1960s, comic book writer Jack Kirby allegedly witnessed a mother lift an overturned car to rescue her child, who was trapped underneath it. This particular feat is also one of the most oft-quoted examples of the phenomenon.

I remember watching a documentary of hysterical strength as a very small child so some details are lost to me. However, what I do remember is a story of a man who was on a mountain or in a canyon or something and a large boulder or slab or rock landed on his body. Threw the use of hysterical strength from a fight or flight reaction he was able to lift the object from his body and escape but badly injured his arms in the process.

That said, these stories of hysterical strength are amazing and I really do appreciate the scientific exploration of the stories and the damaging effects these feats of strength had on the heroes afterwards. It's a shame that hysterical strength can't be scientifically assessed in an ethical kind of way but at least we have some explanations.
