Captain Antarctica Survival: Wild foods - Sedge

Показать описание
Sedges are a common plant and there are many types. The one shown here is mat sedge or mat rush (lomandra longifolia). It is worthwhile gently pulling on the leaves on any sedge or rush and if they start to slide out you will usually find a centimetre or two of edible starch at the base. As you chew further up the plant it will be come too fibrous. However, if you continue to chew the plant and spit out the juice you will end up with length of fibres that can be turned into string. A number of varieties do not seem to produce the soft edible base so don't expect this to work in every case if finding a sedge. Make sure you confirm the identity of any wild food with your local herbarium before eating.
