5 Reasons Automatics Are Better Than Manual Transmission Cars

The manual transmission is without a doubt one of the greatest inventions of modern history. That said, it's certainly not without flaws. Manual transmissions use a clutch instead of a torque converter like automatics, in order to create a coupling between the engine and the transmission. You might be surprised to find out that this actually results in lower wheel torque than an automatic. Additionally, manual transmissions shift differently than automatics, and this also leads to additional complications. While providing more control to the driver is generally a benefit, allowing a computer to take control can often lead to less mistakes. Check out the video for five major advantages of automatics over manual transmissions, which may impact your next buying decision.

One disadvantage of manuals that I learned the hard way: you need all 4 limbs to operate it. If you travel alone, and hurt either a hand or a leg (especially a leg), you are basically stranded. On the other hand, a pirate with one hand, one leg and one eye would be perfectly fine operating an automatic, he would probably even be texting his crewmates in the process.

My passion is driving. Nothing beats a manual transmission car, the feeling and engagement you have while driving a manual car can't compared to an automatic one.

Just bought a manual a few months ago. Still learning. It’s scary. And it keeps me awake . I also feel I’m part of the vehicle.

I am surprised I haven't see more people mention it. The biggest advantage of an automatic is being able to inch forward more easily especially while in traffic.

For example: lets say you are driving in stop and start traffic on the freeway. You don't have to constantly be operating the clutch while putting the car in 1st gear then neutral. All you have to do in an automatic is release the break to start and then press the break to stop -> even the gas is not necessary unless you are going over 5 miles an hour. You might not think this is that big of a deal but most people get very tired driving in slow traffic for hours with a manual.

"An automatic is better because my friends also can drive it" as a European I couldn't stop laughing.

Advantages of an automatic:
- Easier crawling to fit in tight spots
- No torque loss when changing gears
- Impossible to stall

Advantages of a manual:
- No one will ever ask to borrow your car

A few advantages with the manual. 1) Your vehicle will never be stolen because no one can drive a manual anymore. 2) You won't have to pay $5, 000 to have your automatic transmission replaced. You will have to do a clutch, but that costs a lot less. My Honda Civic Si has 150, 000 miles on it and the clutch still works like brand new. 3) You can coast! I do this all the time when I see a red light coming up or going downhill. 4) If your battery dies, you can still get your car started. Get the car on a little incline, hop in, let it roll down the incline and pop the clutch. Boom, you are on your way.

From a country that has really crappy traffic, I'd trade my manual for an automatic any day of the week.

I've been driving manual transmissions exclusively since 1989. Any time I drive an automatic in the rain, I find myself spinning the tires when accelerating from a stop. So, yes, modern torque converters are more efficient than traditional clutches.

When I was looking at ordering a Dodge Ram with the big V8 in 2003 or so, I noticed they didn't offer a manual transmission. #1 explained why. I got a 18-year-old question answered! Thanks.

Never driven a manual before but, as someone that spent large parts of my childhood getting driven around in my dad's Mustang GT, I can say that one of the reasons to drive stick is because they're more fun.

Also, for cars with crappy automatic profiles that make moving from a dead stop a chore, even a psudo-manual is better. You can force the car to spend more time in lower gears.
