3 Phase Motor Startup No Soft Start

Quick comparison between a 2 phase motor VS 3 phase motor, across the line startups. First motor is a 15HP 2 phase motor powering the main supply fresh air fan for a 90+ year old school.
Second one is a 35hp 3 phase motor powering a large fan. The wheel (fan) is roughly 6ft in diameter, weighs over 450 lbs and rotates about 950rpm. First startup after replacing the belt on it and has a great motor whine

The sound of that electric motor tho. Sounds so good. I love the sounds of old electric motors starting up.

A school I went to had a giant fan just like this one, with the pulley and everything, I was allowed to see it every now and then, it was awesome.

I Like the noise of the London tube trains as they move off.

Love the startup sounds of these motors. Love to see old machinery still running strong. What's the voltage and amperage on these? I counted seven belts on the first fan. How do you loosen them for replacement?

from back in the day when motors were rated for hard-line starting...
Nowadays they tend to be "inverter duty" and "vector duty", which basically means they've skimped on the temporary overload capacity and then put some word-spin on it to make that sound like a good thing :P

Reminds me of the startup for the heating system at my old house— it’d echo all the way through the vents.

Sometimes i imagine being in a car and the car takes off and you hear the sound of a 3 phase motor

So what? I remember in a water pumping station a pump with a 400V/130kW 3-phase motor - without softstart or Y/Δ starting. When the engine started, the lights went out for 10 seconds...

I once worked at a building that had 3 fans / 7ft diameter each to a shared chamber . there was ship door hatches and the motors were 200 hp @ 600 vac each !

your electric company must love you for the Amps you pull when turning on

The 3 phase system allows for a faster, smoother start up under load than single phase. It's tough to explain, but in simpke terms imagine a sequenced electromagnetic push at each 120° around the entite circle.

Man, the second 3 phase motor sounds like a subway accelerating :D

Gotta love when there is zero belt slip!

Back in the 1950's we had a large three phase motor that pumped water from a well for 60 Cabins in our Motel. The transfer belt got warm and we "had" a cat that laid on it for naps.
