Why is the Ocean Salty?
Показать описание
Ahoy! Let’s Think! Today we answer the question Why is the Ocean Salty?!
Have you ever gone to the beach, played in the water and had some go in your mouth? You’ve probably noticed that it tastes different from water from a bath, pool, river or a lake and has a more salty taste. So why exactly does ocean water taste salty? Unlike rivers and streams which get replenished with freshwater from rain, the ocean not only receives freshwater but also minerals and other runoff from the land. The salt in the ocean comes from two main sources which is runoff from the land and openings in the seafloor. When rivers, streams, and rainwater flow into the ocean, they can erode the rocks on the land. Rocks on land contain salt and other minerals which dissolve into the ocean and contribute to its saltiness.

Another reason why the ocean is salty is due to hydrothermal vents found on the ocean floor. The vents act as exit points for water that has seeped into the ocean crust and have become hotter due to the intense heat from the Earth's core. The high heat can cause chemical reactions which produce salty minerals. As we know, heat rises so the hot water along with minerals escape through the vents into the ocean water.
Two of the most common ions found in ocean water are chloride and sodium which make up 90% of the ions found in the water. That sure is a lot of salt. So the next time you visit the ocean make sure to not drink any of the water.
So that answers the question, Why Is the Ocean Salty.. That took some thinking!
